The Final Red Tide
He curled up into another position and was beginning to feel like it was a little tight, even though, he knew he didn’t want to leave just yet. He felt secure, warm and comfortable. He knew that this was where he was meant to be.
Every once in a while he could hear melodies and wondered where they were coming from, as always he enjoyed the rocking rhythm. Soft spoken words were his favorite even though he had yet to understand their meaning.
He was not sure what to expect in the outside world so it was easy to be patient. He just stretched and wiggled his fingers and toes. With not a care in the world he would just rest and wait until the time was right. Right for what he didn’t know. But he just trusted that all things would turn out to be as they were meant to.
He had heard that the world was a scary place. People searching all over for the things that they thought they needed to make everything right in their life. Always fighting amongst themselves, always trying to get more from each other. They seemed never to have enough of anything.
He had heard that there was a chance that even he may not make it. Especially if he inconvenienced anybody by his presence. He thought about what that would mean and wondered how he would learn not to do that. “Maybe it would be better if I stayed here where I’m warm and safe “he thought.
Little did he know plans were already in place. As if he were an alien from another planet they feared him even though they had not yet met. They were troubled by the unknown and all that they thought he would demand of them.
He heard the traffic in the streets and cheerful sounds of celebrations. He liked that much better then the angry voices and shouting that he sometimes heard late at night. It frightened him and he tried to hide for fear that he’d be found. He felt his heart beat faster and he closed his eyes fearing what he might see. What he didn’t know, but he feared it might be something bad, he knew it would be frightening and make him want to cry.
What was going to happen soon he did not know about. He believed that in the end everything would be O.K. He knew he was part of a plan. God’s plan. And he would see it to its end.
Things seemed slower and quieter then usual. He felt a warm hand on his back smoothly rubbing in a tender way. He had a sense that something was ending. His warm surroundings felt suddenly taut and he was unable to find a comfortable position. Suddenly he felt frightened, he felt pulling on his legs and a twisting, and he wanted to take a breath as he tried to re balance himself reaching for a rope. He felt more pulling and squeezing and then he suddenly left what was the warmth of his space. Had he already become the inconvenience he had heard about ? Was he not to be given a chance ? Did they not know about the love that he could bring to them ?
His small lifeless body both perfect and whole felt only cold as he took his first and last breath. Life deliberately emptied, swept away with the waste of his human remains in a final red tide that just washed him away.
