When was the last time you heard an original Christmas tune on the radio during the holiday season? Not Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas.” Not even Nat King Cole’s unforgettable “The Christmas Song.” Even Mariah, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Toni Braxton, and countless other artists do wonderful renditions of Christmas classics.
But, an original, number one, hot-selling new Christmas standard? Don’t think so.
Not until The Florin Street Band undertook the ambitious project, along with a few musical friends, to record what is being called the first classic Christmas song put out on the airwaves in decades.
We have composer Leigh Haggerwood to thank for the innovative tune that he forked out cash from his own pockets to produce. The song no record company would take on after shopping it around for 3 years to get some backing. You can truly call this record a “labor of love.”
Disappointed by the lack of new, fresh Christmas music, Haggerwood took it upon himself to create a potential masterpiece that could rival any of the past holiday tunes that have become so familiar over the years with people around the world.
For a backdrop, Haggerwood envisioned a Victorian setting. Picture this: snow falling on a wintry wonderland, people milling about, 100 cast and crew, all of good cheer, in a quaint, hometown setting. Sounds lovely. Costs an awful lot.
Enter, a few good friends including the English Chamber choir who came in to lend their voices to the project, recording at Trevor Horn’s studio in London.
Add to that, a group of comrades he dubbed “The Florin Street Band” to sing the harmonious melodies he put together on paper.
Director Nick Bartleet and U.S. cinematographer John Perez (whose resume reads: Beyonce, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Coldplay, and more), jumped on board the “grass-roots” production, ready to tackle the toughest hurdle of the entire project–shooting of the video. Remember the beautiful Victorian town covered with snow? They found the perfect spot–Blists Hill Victorian Town at Ironbridge at Shropshire.
The heart-warming Christmas song, “My Favorite Time of Year,” is set to be released December 6. Here’s hoping for more new, original, and creative Yuletide songs to enjoy during this magical time of the year. Have a listen right here. Follow The Florin Street Band on Facebook here.
