Do the friendships on “Desperate Housewives” demonstrate the five basic and accepted types of good friendships? For women, these types of friendships generally provide balance in their lives. In reality, these friendships change and grow over time and may or may not be clear-cut and defined. However, in a television show the characters must maintain their core identity. In a long running series such as”Desperate Housewives,” the characters must also show some growth and crossover in role identity. In addition, the show must have characters that provide conflicts or mimic the bad types of friendships-the frenemies.
The Types of Friends
The five friend types fall into broad categories based on trait characteristics. For this reason, while this article might suggest a character fits into one profile, you may not agree or believe another character would fit the typing better. This actually verifies that the characters of “Desperate Housewives” have grown in their roles and have rounded out their personalities.
Old Friend -Time Trusted
A key friend type that presents a minor problem for “Desperate Housewives” to portray is the “old friend.” The old friend is the person, that a woman has known her whole life. The premise of “Desperate Housewives” is of an established neighborhood. However, it isn’t likely the characters grew up in this neighborhood. This type of friend is also characterized by being trusted, possibly unlike the other friends, a leader, an opposite type of personality or someone who helps others see themselves as part of the group. The elderly neighbor, Karen McCluskey, fits this friend type as she is physically unlike the other main characters; she is trusted and will stick up for the other characters when needed.
I’m There for You Friend
Two of the “Desperate Housewives” characters fit this friend type profile. Both Susan and Lynnette have made sacrifices for their families. They are the friends who will be there if you call. If you need help, they will try to help or to fix things.
Tell Me About It
The “tell me about it friend” is the friend that has been there and done that and has and keeps secrets. Gabrielle Solis is a woman of secrets with a worldly past.
Mirror- Fun Friend
The mirror or twin friend is someone a woman feels she has a lot in common with and relates to the friend based on common interests or background. This friend may also be the friend that is spontaneous and fun to be around. The character that fits this profile could arguably be several of the characters. However, Renee Perry is the character that seems to have a lot financially and drags the other characters into new projects, adventures or situations.
On “Desperate Housewives,” all of the wives have from time to time been dishonest or had secrets so picking a character to fit this type of friend was complicated. This friend may also be the motivator, truth teller, personal coach or defined by respect and understanding. Bree Van de Kamp, while not necessarily honest, has up until recently been the prim and proper, do things by the book type of personality and held herself to higher standards.
The frenemies are friends that are scheming and devious. In previous seasons, Edie fit into this profile. In the current season, Beth, Paul’s new wife is proving to be a schemer.
