I consider myself to be a moderate Democrat. Fiscally conservative and socially liberal, and no that is not an oxymoron. It is possible to be both in the same body. It just means you have to be able to pay for what you want. There is a huge difference between a need and a want. As a society we should be working together to meet each others needs, not each others wants. What I find distressing about the far right is that they don’t seem to care about the collective need. What I dislike about the far left is that they think that every want can be paid for. Maybe if the country was split into thirds, we could all be happy.
One slice for the ultra-conservatives, one slice for the ultra-liberals, and a third slice for the moderates. We all get to make a choice. For I have a dream. That dream is moderate republicans, democrats, and independents living in peaceful coexistence because they have chosen to listen to the best ideas regardless of political affiliation. Majority rule. No fringe group pressure. Just reasonable people working together to live together. Yes, I have a dream. People get to make a choice, one irrevocable choice on which country that you would elect to live in. Pick your poison and then defend your borders. I would certainly pick the moderate country as I grow weary of trying to deal with the demands of fringe groups pushing and pulling in different directions looking only at their ideas for the few at the expense of the many.
My gut tells me that the moderate country would ultimately be the most successful. Most likely to keep the Constitution intact and maintain a balanced separation of powers. Most likely to be run by majority rule with minority interests protected by the courts and not by filibusters in the Senate. Most likely to keep the separation of church and state. Most likely to have reasonable tax rates to promote the general welfare. Most likely to provide equal opportunity for all. But then what did you expect, I have already declared that I’m a moderate so of course my idea is best right?
Perhaps three separate countries is a little too far fetched. Maybe the answer lies in a simpler solution. Perhaps the solution is the development of a third political party; The Moderate Party. No whack jobs need apply. Check your total self interest and aspirations for world domination at the door. Don’t tell me I need to pay for your wants. The only requirement for membership is a desire to live in peace with your fellow citizens and to prosper. Ex Republicans, Democrats, Independents, dogs, and cats living together? Yes, it’s possible; for I have seen dogs and cats living together!
