The Heartland Trophy is presented to the winner of the annual Iowa Hawkeyes vs Wisconsin Badgers football game. The Heartland Trophy was first presented to Iowa in 2004, when Iowa beat Wisconsin 30 to 7. Iowa has won the Heartland Trophy in 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009. Wisconsin has won the Heartland Trophy in 2006 and 2007.
The Heartland Trophy is a brass bull. The Heartland trophy was designed and crafted by former University of Iowa football player, Frank Strub. The Heartland Trophy is 30 inches tall, 36 inches long and 18 inches deep. The Heartland Trophy is mounted on a walnut base. The Heartland Trophy became the 16th traveling trophy in the Big Ten.
The Iowa vs Wisconsin rivalry is over one hundred years old. The teams have met 85 times. Iowa leads in series victories with a record of 42-41-2. The Iowa Hawkeyes and The Wisconsin Badgers will meet again on October 23, 2010. After that game, they will not meet again for possibly three years due to recently being placed in different divisions. With the new division realignments, this cross divisional rivalry was not protected.
It’s been thought that in 2015, maybe sooner, the Big Ten will go to a nine game per year schedule. If the Big Ten adds a ninth game to the schedule, hopefully they will then protect the Iowa vs. Wisconsin cross divisional rivalry.
The battle for the Heartland Trophy on October 23, 2010 will be broadcast on ABC at 2:30 p.m. (CST)
