Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) and his troupe travel the streets of London attempting to make money while aiding participants in experiencing their fantasies, or nightmares. Unfortunately, years before the Doctor made a deal with the devil, or Mr. Nick (Tom Waits). The doctor traded his immortality for youth for the life of a mortal but at the cost of his first born child on their sixteenth birthday. Valentina (Lily Cole) is almost at that age, and the Doctor decides to make yet another deal with Mr. Nick in order to save her. The group must claim five souls inside the Imaginarium before Valentina turns sixteen, in two days. Luckily for the troupe, they save a young man named Tony (Heath Leadger mainly, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell as well) from his demise and he turns out to have a knack for sales. The race for souls begins.
Before I actually watched this film, I was extremely skeptical about how good it would be. This type of film doesn’t fall into my normal viewing genre and I wasn’t sure it would be enjoyable. I was pleasantly surprised. Most of the reason this film caught my attention in the first place was due to the director. Terry Gilliam has put out some stellar movies in the past; Time Bandits, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Twelve Monkeys just to name a few. Even with a background like that, I was still wary. To my surprise the film was done very artistically and was reminiscent of Fear and Loathing in parts. I was also a huge fan of how the film was able to go on filming even after the unfortunate death of Heath Ledger. The “Imaginarium Tony’s” are all amazing actors and I tip my hat them for taking on small rolls in order to see that this film was still able to be released.
Unfortunately with Heath Ledger’s passing and this being his final film, it was also suspected to be something phenomenal. While this film is entertaining, parts are extremely boring and seem to drone on at times. On a lighter note, the special effects are amazing and very artistic. I give this one a 7/10. Anyone looking for an interesting fantasy film should check this one. Definitely strange yet entertaining.
