The tween years can be very confusing, both for the kids and for the parents. For the tween, it’s about figuring out who they are and what interests them. For the parents, it’s figuring out who the heck their kid is. So it makes sense that getting a good birthday gift for your tween boy can feel near impossible. Something that I often see parents do is that they get their kid a gift that reflects who they want them to be (i.e. books, clothes), and that’s fine but you also have to realize that birthday gifts should be about fun. Since tween at this age can be a bit tough to decode, here are 5 gifts that are pretty universal for any boy of that age.
1. Video games
I did some asking around, and I think I already knew the answer before I asked. The number one gift for boys is video games. There are so many games out there that cater to all sorts of personalities and interests. Does he like cooking? There are games for that. What about singing? There’s an American Idol game out. Even if your kid isn’t the typical kind of boy that’s into games that involve either cars or violence, you’ll still be able to find a game for him.
If you’re not all that video game savvy, there is something you should do first. Ask your kid what systems he has, because if you get him a game that isn’t for his system, he won’t be able to play it. To help you get a sense of what kinds of games are out there, try the Gamestop website.
2. Itunes gift card
You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who wouldn’t use a gift card for music. This is especially great for tween boys because it’s hard to know what they’re into or how fickle their tastes can be. Leaving the actual shopping to them will make them appreciate the gift a lot more.
3. Cool headphones
When I bought BOSE noise canceling earphones a lot of the guys I knew were pretty jealous. This is the most sensible type of earphone for a tween who likes listening to music. Especially if you tend to go on a lot of family road trips where they’re trying to nap and everyone else in the car insists on continuing on with loud conversations. If you want to save money, try buying them off of amazon.com from a seller with a great track record. There are also the cheaper type that look fashionable like these white headphones.
Trends aside, earphones are a lot better for your ears than ear buds, so you’d be doing the kid a favor.
4. Visa gift card
As stated with the Itunes gift card, it’s not a bad idea to let kids do the shopping for themselves. This is another good way of giving them freedom to choose their gift.5. Quirky USB
If you only have the budget to get your tween boy a modest gift, go with something that makes a statement. Not only are USBs useful for school and homework, they also come in all sorts of different forms ranging from USB fans that you can plug into your laptop to keep you cool while you study to a USB disguised as a critter that you can save files on. If your tween is more of the serious type, then just get him a USB port key chain so that he won’t easily misplace it.
Obviously you should ask the tween boy in mind what he wants for his birthday before you go out getting him a gift. But if you’re still at a loss, consider my list. Hopefully this was of some help to you.
