A city like New Orleans that has definitely taken its share of lumps over the past five years, it is good to hear some good news and good music coming out of the city again. Many people consider the city of New Orleans to be the birth place of jazz music. The question of whether New Orleans is the birth place of jazz music happens to be up for debate, but many people including the folks at HBO did see the great litany of musicians to come out of the city and they wanted to make sure that they got the work that they need..
In a city that is dealing with high crime and political scandal, people wanted an even handed portrayal of their city and this is what they got with the new John Goodman series Treme. Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and other officials, community leaders were a little cautious about how their city would be portrayed in the show, but John Goodman is an adopted son of New Orleans and surely would not have the city put in a bad light.
You want accurate portrayals in order to highlight what exactly the people of New Orleans are going through The character of Janette Desantel is a chef who is trying to keep her downtown restaurant open in the once booming city. The kind of problem that Janette is having is only going to be buttressed by the gulf oil spill as the city of New Orleans simply isn’t getting the same kind of business from the people who work in the fisheries that use to come in after a hard day’s work to one of the downtown diners.
Kim Dickens who play the character of Janette Desantel says that they try to be as realistic as possible, but she does admit that there is a little ad-libbing for example when she serves John Goodman food in her establishment. You can hire as many consultants as you want, but most people realize that some of the natural talent of the performers is what will carry the show overall as Dickens said during a recent interview.
John Goodman said during a recent appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman that one of his proudest accomplishments for the show Treme was the fact that the HBO hit was able to give work to some of the local musicians as noted by the Times Picayune.
