Part 8 of the Anne Frank series
The mystery of who betrayed Anne Frank and the families living in the secret annexe of Otto Frank’s office building has been investigation by several sources, from writers, to historians, to Dutch government. All possible suspects were investigated. The last possible suspect was Tonny Ahler.
Tonny Ahlers was a petty criminal at the time. He was also a Dutch Nazi and informant for Kurt Döring who was working for the gestapo headquarters in Amsterdam. Carol Ann Lee named Tonny Ahlers as the informant in her book, The Hidden Life of Otto Frank based on her research pointing to Ahlers alleged blackmail of Otto Frank said to have happened in 1942. Ahlers wife denied the claims made by Carol Ann Lee, however, both Ahlers’ brother and son testified that Ahlers admitted to that he knew about the secret annexe and betrayed the people living there. Again no hard evidence could be produced and Tonny Ahlers was also acquitted by “the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation in their 2003 summary of their investigation.”
The betrayers of the Frank family still remain unknown.
