Viva Mexico! Finally, the 2010 Miss Universe winner came from North America for a change. One of the great highlights of this international beauty pageant is the parade of costumes from the 83 contestants competing this year. Some were mediocre, while others were interesting. Then, there were the amazing costumes. My favorites were from Curacao, Kazakhstan and Mexico. The worst costume was from Zambia. Her top looked like two coconut shells covering her breasts. Brett Michaels and Natalie Morales were on hand as the pageant’s co-hosts. Natalie did a superb job whilst Brett seemed very much out of his element.
Top 15 Finalists
Mexico (One of my favorites from the very start, a very beautiful lady)
Philippines (She got the loudest cheers from the crowd)
What I did not like about this portion of the pageant is the ladies all wore the same designed swimsuit. In other pageants the contestants at least chose their own swimsuits that also showed off their personality. However, during this phase we were entertained by the performers from “Viva Elvis” Cirque de Soleil interspersed with the finalists walking around in very skimpy bikinis. Miss Jamaica and Miss Mexico received the highest scores in the swimsuit competition.
The Judging Panel
During the telecast we were introduced to the esteemed judges from the world of sports, films, TV, music, modeling, magic and broadcasting. I was very impressed with the judges for the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. Usually they have a bunch of D-List & Z-Listers. Here come the judges:
Nikki Taylor – Model
William Baldwin – Actor, one of the famous Baldwin brothers
Chynna Phillips – Singer, formerly of “Wilson Phillips”.
Evan Lysacek – Olympic Gold Medalist in Mens Figure Skating
Tamron Hall – MSNBC Broadcaster
Chazz Palminteri – Actor and upcoming one-man show in Vegas called “A Bronx Tale.”
Jane Seymour – Actress
Criss Angel – This century’s Harry Houdini who’s an illusionist.
Sheila E. – Musician and Percussionist
Top 10 Finalists and the Evening Gown Competition
Now the finalists would become ten in all with five others leaving in the wake. Afterwards, they would model their evening gown with a film clip of them describing in detail their gowns. John Legend and the Roots Crew performed while the ladies walked around in front of the judges and viewing audience.
Miss Mexico – She had by far the most beautiful gown that was all red. Jimena Navarrete was stunning in it. Not surprising she had the highest score followed by Miss Jamaica.
Miss Puerto Rico – Without a doubt the worst gown of all.
Miss Philippines had a little trip-up with the long train on her gown.
Top 5 and the All Important Final Question
Miss Mexico’s question was asked by Evan Lysacek on children and the internet. She gave her answer via a translator. Miss Mexico’s overall response was very good.
Miss Philippines’s question came from William Baldwin. She actually had the easiest one. All the other ladies gave outstanding answers, but Miss Philippines response was simply dreadful. She was clearly nervous, inarticulate and fake.
And the Winner is…….
Miss Philippines, not surprisingly, became the 4th Runner-Up followed by Miss Ukraine (3rd Runner-Up), Miss Australia (2nd Runner-Up), Miss Jamaica (1st Runner-Up) and the Winner was of course, Miss Mexico – Jimena Navarrete. She represented her home country admirably. Jimena Navarrete scored consistently high scores in all the events. I want to give my sincere congratulations to the newly crowned 2010 Miss Universe. Viva Mexico.
