This summer has been pretty dismal for me. Not only has it been extremely hot, but being jobless like many New Yorkers means paying $2.25 to get some place is not even an option. Yet I still decided to take my sister and daughter out to get ice cream. My brother suggested we go down to Brooklyn Bridge Park, a location that has expanded so dramatically in such a short time period that I was shocked.
I was unaware that this was a project on the budget for New York City. They are always talking about how much debt we are in, so spending money on a brand new park was shocking to me. It was also shocking to see how beautiful it was. I had been to the Brooklyn Pier and being there seeing the NYC skyline was beautiful, but the new park puts you right on the water. You are just a boat ride away from Manhattan, and hopefully by next spring the complete park will be finished.
The finished park will feature a beach, which is ideal since Coney Island and Brighton Beach are always so crowded during the summer. A new beach right next to the Brooklyn Bridge will be a change. A tidal wave pool and a fishing post will also join the park. The children’s playground is exceptional; I made sure my daughter had a chance to play. The whole play ground is lined with a soft cushioned surface so that if the children fall they wont get hurt. So when she was walking around touching everything I was not afraid one bit when she hit the ground.
The new changes bring a smile to my face. I cannot wait for the beach, the tidal wave pool, and the fishing post. These are all additions that will help improve the quality of life for Brooklyn citizens. I know it comes at the cost of tax dollars but a lot of it comes from private donations as well, so that makes it easier to digest. I cannot wait till next summer; the weekends will be quite enjoyable.
