Derek Jeter, the Yankee Captain, is a free agent. He may, however, be the first free agent in history where just about the whole world assumes his team will resign him. Unlike other free agents, you don’t hear any rumors about the possibility of him going to another team. There is one team that should be in the bidding for Derek Jeter, and that team is the New York Mets.
The Mets need Jeter more than any other team, including the Yankees. He brings much more with him than just his play on the field. He would bring fans, a winning attitude, fill a hole in the infield, and allow the Mets, for once, to upstage the Yankees.
Maybe no other team in baseball needs to fill their seats more than the Mets. Attendance is way down, and no one would fill those seats faster than Jeter. Met fans would want to see him in a Met uniform, and more importantly Yankee fans who are also Jeter fans would come to the games. His signing would mean an instant boost in ticket sales.
Possibly more important than ticket sales is the winning and classy attitude Jeter could bring to the team. He has always conducted himself with class. He knows what it takes to win. He could teach that to not only the players, but the whole organization. A veteran with his leadership skills is hard to find, ask the Mets. When was the last time they had a true leader both on and off the field.
The signing of Jeter wouldn’t just be about filling seats and attitude. He could actually help them fill a need in the infield. The best use for him would be to have him move to the second base position. Jose Reyes is a better shortstop, at this point in their careers, than Jeter. If he is unwilling to make the move, then they could move Reyes to second and the infield would still be much improved.
The biggest benefit to the Mets signing Jeter has nothing to do with on the field. The Mets have long been considered the little brother of the Yankees. The Yankees always seem to have first choice when it comes to free agents. How ironic would it be for the Mets to sign the one free agent everyone just assumed would end his career as a Yankee. The headlines it would garner nationly, even worldwide, would make the potential signing of Cliff Lee by the Yankees look like an after thought on the back pages of the New York papers.
The signing of Derek Jeter is either going to be something that was expected by the New York Yankees or the biggest steal of the offseason by the Mets. The Mets new management could send a message to the Yankees of we are in New York too, and we mean business. Either way New Yorkers will be the big winners, because no matter which uniform he wears, he will always hold himself with class and bring a winning attitude we can all appreciate.
