“The Office” has established itself as a slice of Americana. A disjointed peculiar slice of Americana but a slice just the same. The exploits of the Dunder Mifflin office, shot in the “mockumentary” style, creates a unique form of comedy that brings in the viewer and leads to some hilarious possibilities.
Casino Night: Season 2 Episode 22 (Aired 5/11/2006)
Michael organizes a charity casino night in the warehouse of Dunder Mifflin and invites two women, Jan and Carol to the same event. The drinks are flowing and “The Office” staff are in rare form for this hilarious and game changing episode.
Eventually Michael chooses Carol over Jan at the end of the episode and Jim makes a play for Pam and also has an encounter with Jan. This is also the episode Jim is leaving for Stamford after a transfer. A well written and funny episode which displays the talent of the writers and actors on “The Office.”
“The Injury:” Season 2 Episode 12 (Aired 1/12/2006)
Michael burns his foot on a George Foreman grill and the resulting chain of events is rolling on the floor laughter at its best. The physical comedy of Steve Carell is put on full display in this episode and the funniest bit of slap stick comedy is when Michael is attempting to lift his foot to get his cat scan.
Also in the cat scan room is Dwight who has suffered a concussion. The show uses the episode to display how the characters are developing their relationships and they are evolving as the second season progresses. Dwight is still being picked on by Jim and Pam but Pam is somewhat protective of Dwight in this episode.
“The Christmas Party:” Season 2 Episode 10 Aired (12/6/2005)
There are several Christmas episodes that stand out but the best Christmas episode is from Season Two of “The Office.” In this episode also known as Santa Claus Comes to Scranton, “The Office” staff holds a Secret Santa gift exchange. Michael exceeds the $20 gift limit and purchases a $400 I Pad. Once Michael receives a hand made gift he invents “Yankee Swap” (someone can steal an opened gift or open a new gift).
Angela feels depressed that no one has acknowledged her effort in arranging the party by going above and beyond the call of duty. Angela is secretly dating Dwight and Kelly is making forward advances towards Dwight which creates and underlying friction. The sub plots in the episode come fast and furious and the finale is completely unexpected.
“The Fire:” Season 2 Episode 4 Aired (10/11/2005)
The episode begins with Pam learning that Jim and Katy have begun to date and Michael giving Ryan a glowing report on his check point review. The fire alarm sounds and “The Office” moves out of their regular environment and they end up in the parking lot to wait out a kitchen fire in the building.
A hilarious game is introduced as the employees attempt to pass the time. “Desert Island Picks” and “Who Would You Do?” Michael begins to dote on his protege Ryan and Dwight is hurt. When Dwight finds out Michael left his cell phone in the building he rushes in.
Ryan calls Michael’s phone to help Dwight and the fun rings in Michael’s pocket. Dwight emerges coughing and reveals that Ryan started the fire with microwave. Dwight and Michael then make fun of Ryan by mocking him singing their own version of a Billy Joel song, “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”
“Cocktails:” Season 3 Episode 18 Aired (2/22/2007)
Nothing says comedy like a few “Cocktails.” Michael makes Jan uncomfortable with his public displays of affection at the party thrown by their companies CFO. Meanwhile, Dwight is roaming the house and being hyper critical of the layout. Karen points out all of her ex-boyfriends at the party but Jim does not know that she is only having fun with him and he becomes uncomfortable.
While their superiors are partying at the CFO’s house, the rest of “The Office” is drinking heavily at the bar, Poor Richards for happy hour. Pam tells Roy that she and Jim kissed on Casino Night and Roy goes ballistic. The episode ends with Jim proclaiming angrily, “I’m going to kill Jim Halpert.”
