Propaganda is everywhere at every time of day! The definition of propaganda can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda and is very alarming when the meaning is understood. Media is a big contributor to what you see and where you see it. Leadership over a country lives off of propaganda and without it, they would lack the respect that they receive. There can be positive propaganda and often times, there is, but there is also some propaganda that can have a negative influence and that is what this article will focus on.
Propaganda can change a person’s thinking without them even noticing. The internet, the radio, and the news are some of the tools that are used to promote propaganda and oftentimes, we hear many of the same things every day. For example, yahoo.com dated Friday, September 17, 2010, there were ten main headlines, of which nine of them were negative. Many people, if you observe their character, seem to be either depressed, in a bad mood, or in a very deep thinking process. It is not often that you walk down the street of New York City and the majority of the people are smiling. Why is that? Look at the news and find out how many things were positive. The news wants negative propaganda to spread all over the air waves and the power of propaganda changes a fairly positive person to a somewhat negative person, if that person reads the paper or listens to the news enough.
The promotion of something good that may not be necessarily be good can be used by the power of propaganda. If a country has a dictator as a leader, propaganda can promote him or her as a hero and tell all the good things that they have done. The news media can be controlled by the government in some cases and they must publish what they are told to publish. If this is the case, propaganda can hide the facts of the truth and promote an evil person to be a hero that all should honor, love, and respect.
The power of propaganda can plant a seed in a person that will cause them to do something extreme. For example, go to www.google.com/ and type in the words “Qur’an burning” and see what comes up. There is page after page of Rev. Jones’ plan to burn the Qur’an and even though he decided not to go forward with the burning, which was a smart idea that probably planted the seed into the head of some extremist to do what Jones wouldn’t do. Additionally, if that topic would have never been plastered all over the internet, that extremist would have never had that idea. Ideas are spurned from propaganda and there is no guilt felt, but rather another news story waiting to happen.
Propaganda is not always bad and this article is not meant to bash the media, but rather to open the eyes of the people to know what they believe and to not be drawn in by negative propaganda.
