I love shopping at Dollar Tree. I find amazing deals there. Recently, the store has added items that mimic some of the most popular “As Seen On TV” products. Unfortunately, these are often a bit hit and miss. Some work as well or better than the more expensive products. However, others don’t hold a candle to the original.
My latest foray into the “As Seen on TV” line is a little gadget that is supposed to help you keep your handbag or shopping bags off the ground. Dollar Tree calls their version of this product the Purse Mate. You get two in a package; one in silvertone and one in goldtone. But do these products cut the mustard? Let’s take a look and see.
One of Tee Vee Brands Personal Touch products, the Purse Mate makes several claims. Let’s examine each of them to see how well they are carried out.
Claim #1. Keeps handled items like handbags and shopping bags off the floor. That is true. Oddly enough, these flimsy little gadgets do work. I tried it with my handbag, which weighs at least 4 lbs. I also tried it with four full plastic grocery bags that weighed about 8 lbs. The Purse Mate held them both with equal ease. Therefore, it gets 5 out of 5 stars for its first claim.
Claim #2. Is great for a variety of locations. That could include restaurants, some movie theaters, the office and more. This claim is true, at least in part. The effectiveness of the Purse Mate depends somewhat upon the thickness of the table or surface on which it is being hung. If that happens to be more than a couple of inches, the balance of the Purse Mate is thrown off, making it difficult to hold items of heavier weight. Therefore, the product gets only 3 out of five stars for this claim.
Claim #3. The steel hook will hold up to 30 lbs. I hung both my purse and a few full grocery bags on the hook together and it held somewhat, but the balance was precarious at only 20 lbs. I certainly wouldn’t put anything breakable on the same hook at the same time. Still, it held so Purse Mate gets 4 out of 5 stars for this claim.
Claim #4. It will secure your purse and bags. True. Since you can choose to hang these items close to your person, you have ultimate control over who can or cannot reach them. This claim is accurate and worth 5 out of 5 stars.
Claim #5. It’s as pretty as it is functional. That’s up for debate. While the product from which the Purse Mate is adapted is made of metal throughout, sadly Purse Mate is not. The hook itself does appear to be made from durable steel. However, the top decorative piece is made out of plastic. Even the faux jewel is plastic. Consequently, the metallic coloring rubs off easily. That means this product won’t likely last as long as its original competitor. Purse Mate only gets 2 out of 5 stars on this one.
That is a total of 20 stars out of a possible 25. That is still pretty good. However, if you are buying this gadget as a major gift for a loved one, I would recommend upgrading to the original product. If it is for yourself; however, the Purse Mate just might your personal needs. It meets mine with ease.
Purse Mate does have some clever advertising going for it. I spotted it halfway across the store because of its cute simulated purse shape done in vibrant hot pink. I zeroed it on it in less than one minute flat. That doesn’t often happen to me because I’m kind of jaded when it comes to packaging.
I actually like this product. I’m giving one to my sisters as a part of a basket of gifts. None of them would buy it for themselves but I suspect they will all use it and, in the long run, that’s all that really counts.
Purse Mate is distributed by Greenbrier International, Inc. out of Chesapeake, Virginia. It is sold at Dollar Tree; two for $1.
