In a previous article we interviewed author and editor of Bite Me Magazine, Arlene Russo. Today we take a look at her latest book, The Real Twilight: True Stories of Modern Day Vampires.
“For real vampires there is no hype, no fad, it is a destiny that calls them, it is something in their blood.”
According to Arlene with such the quick rise of vampire fiction in pop culture, she wanted to research the real thing. So, for the book she interviewed dozens of practicing vampires about their lifestyle. She also spoke with several scholars about the subject. As a result she found that the legend of Robin Hood may be based on a vampire story.
She wanted to look at the vampire subject as a belief that they do exist. She duscusses the appeal of them because of their power, beauty, immortality, and romance. She believes that with the world becoming so computerized that we long for romance and that the vampire provides that.
Here is a quote from the book,” Arlene dispels myths including the one that vampires are heartless predators. In fact “true vampires do not need to kill at all and instead cultivate a relationship with their donor, thus ensuring a regular supply of blood.” Nor are they afraid of the sun or garlic. And they don’t bite their victims..”
The Real Twilight mixes anecdotal stories and academic research to provide a great resource for vampire enthusiasts.
Lexington readers can find it available on Amazon.com – here as well as at the Hamburg Half Price Books Store.
So, what do you think of the idea of this book. Next we will be looking at her first book, Vampire Nation.
