This is the first in a two part series of excerpts that I am sharing with my AC family that are in the new book that I am in the process of writing. Thus far I’ve written my outline, my major character list, my introduction, and my concluding paragraphs. Hey, doesn’t every write the beginning and the end of a book first? Now you can understand why my parents still don’t understand me. LOL
Introduction: The Importance of the Rescue Mission
The corner, store-front rescue mission is an important place for the poorest of the poor in the low rent district. It’s the social hub of the neighborhood and the place where the people take many of their meals, worship, be entertained, fellowship and even sleep when the need arises. It’s their mecca, a very holy place to them.
As a disabled woman on a fixed income, that was my holy place for a long time, and these people were my friends.
Let me introduce you to them. Let me take you on a journey to the shadowy world of the poor, the invisible place in plain sight where the poor live among us.
These are the people who serve you and burden you: the fast food workers of the world, the sick, the single Moms who live off your tax dollars, and even the criminal element. Some were saints and some were sinners, but they all worshiped at the Mission. Come and meet them and learn of their many facets.
