I’m not an educated man. I’m not even a well liked man. I spend all of my time watching sheep, and they aren’t even my animals. Don’t get me wrong, I like animals, but the smell and the contempt of the rest of my people really make it hard for me to enjoy my lot.
It was cold that night, and we had a small fire going. One of my fellows was fleecing the new boy out of his first meager coin. I was trying to have a conversation with the other. Unfortunately, he’d found the wine skin and wasn’t able to do much in the way of speaking.
Suddenly, this creature descended from somewhere above. He glowed, and his clothes were whiter than anything I had ever seen before, including the marble on the Temple Mount . Everyone looked up, and all of us were afraid.
The creature, who looked a lot like a man, stood on the ground in front of us and spoke. He said that in Bethlehem , that stinky, Podunk of a town, a great event had happened. I have to admit, I rolled my eyes. The only event going on in that town tonight was the stupid census. It made me glad that I was here instead of there.
The angel told us some malarkey about how the Baby born this night would be a Savior to His people. He gave us a sign to look for, the Child would be wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. Honestly, who would put a baby in a feed trough?
My attitude changed a lot with the next event. Millions of angels joined the one before us and they sang. I’ve never heard such glorious music. They were all praising God and saying that He was at peace with us, His people.
I’m not only uneducated, I’m not a religious man. I believe in God, I know what I was taught as a child, but it doesn’t always translate to the rough work we shepherds have to do.
I’m telling you, I felt a thrill through my whole body. All of a sudden, I HAD to go to Bethlehem . I had to see this sight, and I believed I would find exactly what was described. I wasn’t alone. Even my inebriated fellow shepherd was sober and ready to run the three miles into the town.
When we got there, we had a bit of trouble getting to see the child. You’d think a shepherd would be welcome at a stable, but apparently not this one. We had to explain what had happened before we were allowed to see the Baby.
I have made up my mind. I may not have the opportunity to become much better educated, but from now on I will follow my religion. There is a God, and He has sent us a Savior.
