Appearing today on the Oprah Show was Kody Brown and his four wives. And by “four,” I do not mean ex-wives. No. The Brown family, stars of TLC’s reality TV show, The Sister Wives, claims to be one big, one happy, one polygamous family.
I have to ask: really? Happy?
Meri, the first and only legal wife, has been married to Kody for 20 years. They have one daughter together. It was Meri who introduced her husband to his second wife after only three years of marriage. A year later, Christine joins the family as the third wife. And within the last year, Robyn joins in as wife number four.
If that isn’t enough to make your head spin, Kody and his four wives have a combined total of 16 children.
I guess I am questioning whether or not a polygamous family lifestyle can truly be a happy way of life because, well, of all of the questions that I have.
For instance: How can they afford to live this way? Do they all share their incomes or are expenses kept separate? Until recently when Meri lost her job because of all of the public exposure to their family lifestyle, all but one of the wives worked outside of the home. Kody has a career as well.
Another question I have is related to the supposed sister-hood feeling the wives report to have. How can there really not be any jealousy going on here? Seriously. Forget the fact that this one guy appears to have it pretty darn good being able to go from wife to wife without conflict from the others. But we are talking about women here. Four of them. Three of which live in the same house. And all who have kids. Do they really expect me to believe that there is no jealousy? No one feels jipped from not having enough attention? No one feels like their own biological children are not getting enough attention from the father who has to spread himself and his time between FOUR women and SIXTEEN children?
I can’t buy it. Maybe I’m more selfish than most. But I have four children from a former marriage, and a significant other who has three children from his previous marriage. And there is NEVER enough time for everyone to be happy. And jealousy prevails; with the adults and with the children.
And lastly, I just have to say that, even if I am way off base for second guessing the smiles and happy stories that this family put forth today on the Oprah Show, how can this family truly claim happily-ever-after-status with the threat of possible jail-time for all the adults? Since they decided to go public on their reality show The Sister Wives, authorities have launched an investigation into the legal side of living a polygamous lifestyle. These people could lose their kids.
Money, jealousy and jail time? To me, this sounds like a recipe that could lead to an unhappy marriage. Or should I say, marriages?
Unless of course, that old saying, “The more the merrier,” is true for marriages.
