Star Trek, as one of the all time great science fiction franchises, is a particular favorite of video game programmers. That means that there are a lot of Star Trek games, but while many of these are good games, there are also some very bad games. This is because these games have been made over decades by a number of different developers and different teams and generally for the PC which is one of the most versatile of platforms. So what are the five Star Trek games that are most worth playing?
5. Star Trek (PC)
One of the earliest Star Trek games is the text based game called Star Trek. This is strongly connected to Super Star Trek which was included in BASIC computer games, propelling that book to sell a million copies. In this game you are the enterprise, represented by an E, hunting down a series of Klingon ships which are represented by K. you have a set amount of energy and limited number of photon torpedoes. Moving and shooting takes energy which you can regain from star bases. There is a lot of strategy in this game especially for a game from the 1970’s.
4. The Star Trek: 25th Anniversary (PC, Mac, Amiga, GameBoy)
This video game is the first popular hit of the Star Trek Video game franchise. The graphics have certainly aged but this has a lot going for it. Built as an episodic point and click adventure you have seven episodes. What makes this very good is that it was voiced by the original actors, and while not everything works perfectly it is a lot of fun.
3. Birth of the Federation (PC)
The Birth of the Federation is a 4x strategy game created by Microprose. You had the choice between the five races, the Federation, the Klingons, the Romulan Star Empire, the Ferengi Alliance and the Cardassian Union. Each has a major change. What this is able to do that many other Star Trek games which is the size and time of the federation. It also has a large number of connections to races.
2. Star Trek Armada II (PC)
Armada is a real time strategy game in which you can play as the Federation, the Klingons, The Borg and Species 8474. Each of them has a variety of ships and must gather resources to build more, research and try to defeat the others. With different strategies for each race this game should have a faction that any real time strategist will like.
1. Star Trek Online (PC, MMOLRPG)
The most recent of the Star Trek games and while there are flaws these are being addressed quickly and made up completely by the ability to go back in time and help the original enterprise survive battles, see the crew of the Excalibur, play as Klingons and more.
