Throughout much of our history as a nation we have been taught lies about the American Indians. We’ve been taught that they were incapable of governing themselves and had to have the white man take care of them in order to civilize them. This is an outright pack of lies.
The truth of the story of the American Indians is that they had a government that many of the people in the colonies were jealous of because it provided great freedom. The Iroquois Confederation had a constitution for over 300 years before the US Constitution was ever written that guaranteed the freedom of religion and freedom of speech. This was unheard of in European circles of the day.
Not only did the American Indians have an enviable government, they also had greater cities, prior to the eradication of them, than Europe. In 1521 when Cortez marched his murderous band into the valley of Mexico he came across one of the largest cities of the world at that time in Tenochtitlan and it had better irrigation and sanitation than did most European cities of its day. This was just one of the achievements that the American Indians had prior to the arrival of the Europeans. After the Europeans came, American Indians still proved their abilities to surpass the colonial powers in areas that have been denied.
In the late 1700’s and early 1800’s, the American Indians of the Southeastern US developed literature and printing presses. At the time they did this much literature and printing materials were being still imported into the US by the whites in control of the country. The literature of the American Indians of the Southeastern US was so prevalent in Indian circles with books, newspapers, and other materials that it was found on the Plains as late as the 1890’s when the whites were killing off the Sioux at battles like Wounded Knee. But this is squashed by the official sources and is not taught in our schools.
The reasons for the lack of telling of the true story of the American Indians may be many. However, one thing is for certain, the truth of the American Indian is not fully taught in our schools as it should be.
