A national sales tax would be a fair tax and an effective weapon against the national debt.
With a sales tax everybody pays the same rate. It takes the work out of the process for the American people and it generates more income for the government. It has also worked well for the majority of other nations. It just make sense to try it, it has to work better than our traditional system.
The national sales tax would do away with the other taxes we pay the federal government and consolidates them into one tax.” It abolishes all federal personal and corporate income taxes, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, and self-employment taxes and replaces them with one simple, visible, federal retail sales tax”(Americans for fair taxation). With the national sales tax everyone pays a simple rate on purchases of new items. In his 2008 book, “100 Million Unnecessary Returns,” Yale law professor Michael J. Graetz estimates that a VAT(value added tax or sales tax) of 10 to 14 percent would raise enough money to exempt families earning less than $100,000 — about 90 percent of households — from the income tax and would lower rates for everyone else. It could have a refund for basic necessities like food or medical care. It also gives Americans control over what they pay to the government. If you cut your spending and you pay less taxes.
A national sales tax takes away anxiety. People will not have deadlines that they have to file their taxes by. People would not have to keep receipts anymore and have no more forms to file. People would no longer have to deal with the IRS. Would it not be nice to keep all of your paycheck, and not have all those taxes taken out first? “The federal tax code is a disaster no one would come up with if we were starting from scratch,” Paul (Rand Paul) said in a written response to an anti-tax group. “I support making taxes flatter and simpler. I would vote for the ‘fair tax’ to get rid of the 16th Amendment, the IRS and a lot of the control the federal government exerts over us.” “Some conservatives have long argued that a consumption tax would provide a simpler and more efficient alternative to income tax”. Sales tax is more transparent than income tax, people know how much they are paying and when .Paying taxes on purchases is less stressful than filing income taxes.
Finally, let’s look at the increase of money to the government. Without increasing the amount most Americans already pay, the government could dramatically increase its revenue. “Sales tax is less volatile than income tax. During economic booms, income taxes rise dramatically and during economic slumps income taxes plummet. Consumption, on the other hand, while it still rises and falls, has peaks that are lower and valleys that are higher, leaving a more level and predictable revenue stream for the Federal government”. Some states already rely on a sales tax for the majority of their revenue. “You could look at the finances of Texas and Florida. In addition to having states economies larger than that of most countries, Texas and Florida also rely on sales taxes for more than 75% of their state revenues” “Linder’s(Rep. John Linder R-GA) plan would abolish the IRS, creating in essence, he said, a $3 trillion to $5 trillion tax cut.” A sales tax also taxes everyone. Non citizens and illegal aliens will have to pay their share; think of the money that will generate.
It is easy to see that a national sales tax is fair to everyone. It is easy to understand what you pay and when. Sales tax is very transparent and is easier to enforce. “According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), more than $3.5 billion in taxes is owed by almost half a million Federal employees and retirees. Of the nearly half-million Federal employees, 1,000 work on Capitol Hill. How can we expect Americans throughout the country to decipher our complex tax code when those who are helping to legislate the tax code are themselves confused”? A national sales tax is the only option to fight our rising deficit. We need to do the right thing and let congress know we want a sales tax.
