Finally an episode about Caroline, who was so great last season until she became so insecure about her relationship with Matt. She’s back to her perfectionist ways but also changing and finally getting the help and advice she deserves.
Caroline wakes up in the hospital and is hungry. It’s the middle of the night and the nurse on duty is sort of bitchy and tells C to just go back to bed because breakfast isn’t until 7 am. Caroline sees a blood bag and grabs it just before the nurse appears right in her face asking her what she’s doing. C drinks it surreptitiously in bed, at first she coughs and almost throws it up, but then she sucks at it and is satisfied. During the day she puts her hand up to the sunlight but gets burned by it. Then Matt visits her and she insists she get released that night. Matt opens the shades but she freaks out and tells him to close them. Later on she looks in the mirror and freaks out again when she sees her veiny vamp eyes and fangs. The nurse comes in and C compels her (probably cuz she drank human blood she’s able to do this, remember Stefan has trouble since he only drinks animal blood) to let her out of the hospital early. Then C bites her and compels the nurse to remember nothing. C then takes off to the annual carnival because she doesn’t think Elena can manage the right way.
Damon visits Carol Lockwood and she invites him to join the Council. Damon listens in to Tyler and Uncle Mason talking when they come back from a run. Mason is asking Tyler all these questions about if he notices what happens when he gets angry or remembers anything about those episodes. Tyler says he’s an athlete so he naturally is strong and that he blacks out so can’t remember much. Later on Mason is looking for a moonstone that is a family heirloom, sentimental but not worth anything.
At the carnival, Stefan and Elena are worried about Katherine, but she’s disappeared. Elena sets up Bonnie with a carnival worker named Carter. Jeremy (looking much cuter than last episode) taunts Damon but Damon gets him in a headlock and removes his ring, reminding Jer that Damon could kill him very easily. Tyler is at the arm wrestling booth and wins until he goes up against Mason. Damon then makes Stefan arm wrestle Mason, but Mason wins. Damon says S didn’t even try but S retorts that yes he did actually and still lost. To find out what’s up with the Lockwood’s Damon compels Carter to pick a fight with Tyler so they can observe what will happen. Tyler can’t help but fight Carter back. Mason shows up and does some legs-together moves and his eyes turn hazel. Damon sees all this from behind a tree.
Then in the school hallway Caroline confronts Damon. She says she remembers everything he did to her and how he was mean and erased her memories. She delivers the message from Katherine: “Game on,” throws him down the hallway and says “you SUCK!” Yes, except they should get back together. Damon, Stefan and Elena realize that K turned C into a vamp but don’t know what to do. Damon says they need to kill her, Elena is horrified, Stef thinks they should kill her too but won’t because of Elena’s feelings.
Caroline meets up with Matt at the carnival. But she freaks out and pushes him away when he hugs her because she can hear his pulse and doesn’t want to bite him. But she can’t help herself when she sees Carter, recovering from the fight and nursing a bloody nose. She snacks on his neck and kills him. Damon shows up with a stake and is about to stake her but Stefan grabs it away from him. They leave but Damon tries to stake her again but this time Elena gets between C and the stake. Stefan takes her into a bathroom and helps her clean up her bloody face. Then he teaches her how to control her veiny eyes by relaxing and breathing – like in yoga class. Meanwhile Bonnie shows up and sees dead Carter and blames Damon. Bonnie is pissed because she thinks Damon turned Caroline but does she forget that she was the one who begged D to give C his blood to heal her. So she mind-bends Damon and then sets him on fire. Elena cries “STOP” but finally has to grab witch Bonnie and shake her before she snaps out of it.
Back at the Salvatore mansion Damon pours himself a drink but Jeremy – sitting in the corner with his hoodie on – tells him he laced it with vervain. Jer says he was waiting for Damon to drink it and then he was going to stake him with the stake he whittled himself. But he didn’t want to be full of hate for vamps like his uncle and father were. Damon confesses that his father also hated vampires. Wow, they have something in common.
Matt sneaks up to Caroline’s bedroom via the window ala Dawson’s Creek. He says he’s in love with her and they kiss. Then when they’re hugging C starts to get veiny eyes but she breathes in and out and they disappear.
Stef and E are at the carnival alone and he takes her up to the top of the Ferris wheel. She asks if it’s going to get any easier and he says no.
At the Lockwood’s house Tyler asks Mason straight up what happened at the carnival. Ty said he saw Mason’s eyes turn – Mason said it was just the reflection of the headlights. Tyler: “What about those moves that you did?” Mason: “It was Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.” Whaat? Well… actually that’s very possible. Tyler pretends like he’s over it but they say goodnight and he rummages in a secret safe for something. He pulls out a wooden box. Inside is a clear oval rock, he picks it up and looks at it.
Next episode: Another Damon/Elena road trip this time Alaric joins and something happens in the woods.

– So glad Caroline is getting some better character development. She actually seems like a good vampire and maybe her and Damon can get together on equal terms. It was also touching how Stefan said he would teach her and take care of her. That was really the first time I started liking him better than Damon – no wonder Kat and Elena love him.
– Jeremy was also much cuter in this episode.
– Bonnie is blah and can’t take the blame for something she’s responsible for. She thinks she’s badass but she’s the one who made Damon give C blood in the first place so she’s actually the one who turned C. It was good last episode when Kat was choking her and putting her in her place.
– Where is Kat and why is she so evil?
