The much anticipated, much promoted new AMC series The Walking Dead premiered on Halloween and lived up to all the hype. Zombie fans can now get a weekly fix of The Walking Dead as Sheriff’s Deputy Rick Grimes played by Andrew Lincoln faces off against the dead as he tries to find his wife and son who escaped the dead and fled to Atlanta.
The first episode has Grimes waking up from a coma after being shot in his line of work as a sheriff’s deputy to find the hospital in shambles and dead mutilated bodies in the hall. Grimes stumbles down the hall to find a door chained shut with the words “don’t open/dead inside”. When hands begin to reach through the crack in the door, Grimes fleas outside where the hospitals’ loading dock is lined with bloody, mutilated bodies wrapped in white shrouds.
Grimes eventually makes his way back to his home and is befriended by another survivor, Morgan played by Lennie James and Morgan’s young son Duane played by Adrian Kai Turner.
Morgan explains to Grimes what is taking place telling the confused deputy, “the bite kills you, then the fever burns you out, but then after a while you come back”.
The viewers are drawn into the humanity of the situation as young Duane cries upon seeing his Mother who had died and now is among the dead walking the streets. Morgan attempts to lure the zombies to him hoping the mother of his son will come so he can shoot her and give her peace. When she shows up Morgan is unable to pull the trigger and she wanders off.
Grimes know his wife and son are still alive after some of their clothes and the family pictures are gone from their home. Grimes takes off on his own to find his family, arriving in Atlanta on a horse after running out of gas in his car.
Unbeknownst to the deputy his wife Lori played by Sarah Wayne Callies, son Carl played by Chandler Riggs and best friend and partner Shane Walsh portrayed by Jon Bernthal are camped with a few other survivors outside of Atlanta
The 90 minute episode ends with Grimes barely escaping to the safety of an abandoned Army tank and the horse being devoured by the flesh eating dead.
OMG can’t wait for next Sunday to roll around, but I don’t think I want to go to sleep right now. Maybe I’ll turn on the Disney Channel to get the Walking Dead out of my head before trying to go to sleep.
