In “The Walking Dead” Season 1 Episode 4 “Vatos,” a couple of disturbing developments occur. First, Rick and company find Merle (most of him) missing from the roof top where he had been handcuffed to a pipe.
Back at the camp, Jim is starting to dig holes obsessively. Just another fun-filled day during the Zombie Apocalypse. Spoilers follow.
The sisters Andrea and Amy go for a little fishing while they reminisce how their father taught them in different ways. This expedition means that the camp is going to eat hearty that night.
Meanwhile, back in Atlanta, Rick’s group has a run-in with what appears to be a Hispanic street gang over the bag of weapons. They get the weapons, and one of the gang bangers, but the gang gets Glenn.
During a parley, the gang leader seems to not be very reasonable about doing a trade. He insists that his guy and the guns must be handed over for Glenn. Rick is not too pleased about that proposal, so instead they come back packing to insist that Glenn be given up without the guns.
But, as it often turns out in life, all is not what it seems. The gang bangers are protecting what once had been a hospice for Alzheimer’s patients. The “gang leader” used to be the custodian. His lieutenant was an occupational nurse. The rest are real gang bangers who have parents and grandparents at the facility.
The lesson for today, children, is that if you are honest about your situation and why you want what you want, then reasonable arrangements can be made. The exchange of hostages is made, along with half of the firearms.
Heading back, Rick and his party notice that someone has stolen their van. So now they have to trot back to camp and hope they are not bushwhacked by the walkers.
In the meantime, Shane restrains Jim since his digging is scaring the women and children. Jim calms down after a while and owns that maybe the sun made him crazy. He also seems to have had a dream that enters into it.
That night, they have a fish fry and all seems well until a party of walkers shows up and start eating people. Several of the principle characters become dinner. All might have had Rick and his friends not shown up blasting away.
Jim now remembers what his dream was about and why he was digging holes.
It is not depicted in the episode, but I suggest Merle stuffed the van full of walkers, drove to the camp, and then loosed the flesh-eating zombies on his former compatriots as revenge. The sick fellow does not deserve to breathe any more.
