I am 61-years-old and I’m amazed sometimes the groups I am attracted to. That is the case with the White Stripes. They are a group that began in the late 1990s. The members are then-married Jack and Meg White. The “Nee” name was actually “Gillis” and it was Jack’s; he took Meg’s name. When the group first started they said they were brother and sister. Actually this Mickey Mouse would have been enough to turn me off to the group had it not been for their haunting music.
The group has instrumentation consisting of Jack White on guitar or piano and Meg on drums and she is quite remedial and yet somehow the sound that the two of them get is amazing.
I am enthralled with melody and harmonies along with rhythm. In the case of White Stripes you get plenty of rhythm, raw rhythm, and lyrics rather than harmonies yet I still like them a lot. Jack does most of the singing and occasionally Meg does some.
An example of how Jack makes things work is singing “Jolene” which is a song written by Dolly Parton. It is about losing a guy to another girl and yet even with Jack singing it; it works for them.
There are three additional songs that I really love. One was the last song done on the old Conan Show, “Denial Twist.” I can only say listen to it.
Jack White has an incredible range. They use very old instruments. They always wear red, white and black. Their name comes from Meg’s favorite candy those little white and red striped mints. They do not practice. Whatever they do it works for me and millions of others.
Do you remember being a little kid in school and running into someone you knew you were going to be friends with? White Stripes captures that wonder somehow in their song “We’re Going to Be Friends.” It is a song that actually brings tears to my eyes.
For some of the most interesting lyrics you’ll hear in awhile consider “Effect & Cause.”
It is believed by many that based on some small movie parts Jack White will be a true star before it’s all over with. Consider the link to his portrayal of Elvis (Walk Hard).
I see my job (or I should say my great privilege) to bring up great and unique talents to our highly valued readers. The White Stripes are a musical group who bring something different to the table. They have proven they have staying power and I think we will see even more talent come from them.
