I fell in love recently. I know, I am happily married to a wonderful woman who still takes my breath away. I have three kids. We are purchasing a house. But two months ago, I fell in love. I furtively hide while I check on my new love. I bite my tongue so as not to drive my family insane while I talk about it. I’ve told my wife about it, and I think she’s ok with it. But at times, I wonder. My love is……the iPad.
I don’t own one. Had no desire for one. I am a techno junkie but rarely care for Apple products. Last year, I caved and bought an iPhone. It is unbelievable. I dropped it and it has a huge crack down the center of the screen, but I still wouldn’t trade it for anything. It is the phone that changed my world. And yet, when Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad, I laughed. Who could possibly want a big iPhone, without the phone?
Apparently me. I saw one of the new commercials about the iPad in July. It looked pretty fun. Then, comic book publishers began selling comics on it. Finally, the local Best Buy got one, and I tried it out two weeks ago. I was a goner from then on.
Yes, it is like a big iPhone or iPod touch for those of you wondering. The OS works the same. The design is incredibly similar. There is no dedicated phone. And it runs 400-800 dollars.
But if you look beyond that is amazing. Imagine walking around your office, in my case the classroom, and typing the entire time. Planning will be a breeze. But then, you get the feeling to watch a movie. Click a button and you are streaming from your Netflix account. You stop because break is over, and you can pick it back up at home later. Want to read a book? Lots of different apps allow you to download books. There’s the Kindle app and iBooks. Bookstores have apps too. Tired of the book? You can play some awesome games. Sure, some of them qualify as shovel ready. Some remind me of the crummy computer games from the 80s. However, some easily could compete against a console game or a PC game. And the most expensive one I’ve seen so far is 13 dollars? Quite the steal.
There are a lot more apps that I would love to go over. There the apps I would use for work, such as Docs to Go. I look forward to GPSing my next vacation using maps on a 10 inch screen. We found Florida using my phone’s GPS. I can only imagine what it would be like to use the beautiful screen from Best Buy. One day, I will find a way to get this beloved piece of technology. I plan on writing more about it soon. But for the meantime, I will have to stick to trying to come up with new reasons to go to Best Buy. Maybe I can convince my honey we need to go window shopping for her some music?
