The World’s Largest Garage Sale is an annual event in the quaint town of Warrensburg, NY. It was a wonderful event again this year from October 1-3rd. The first weekend in October brings hundreds of vendors, artisans, and ordinary folks out to sell the widest array of items imaginable. From hand knitted hats and sweaters to cleaning the antique dishes out of grandma’s attic, from vendors selling brand new sports team blankets to a record-your-self-singing via karaoke booth, there is something for everyone. Live music played through out the day at the grand stand in the center of the town, with local musicians having a great time performing for the large crowds that come from near and far. It is a great way to spend an early autumn weekend.
This year the weather was beautiful and people were out in droves both days. While there were many vendors and traveling food stands set up, giving it a carnival like feel, there were also many local individuals and businesses offering wonderful goods and foods. Walking around watching people enjoying the browsing, one could not help but notice that the knitted ear flap hats, also known as Chullos (a style originating in South America) were very popular this year. Many people, particularly teenagers, but a number of adults and younger children, were wearing the newly bought hats which were available in many styles, colors, and sizes from numerous vendors along Main St.
No matter what you were looking for, it was bound to be there along the 3 parallel streets (and more) with many crossing side streets that ran for about 2-3 miles through the heart of Warrensburg. We found doors and windows for sale, antique signs, taxidermy trophies (antlers, mounted deer heads, etc…), antique furniture, old signs, nice gently worn clothes from infant through adult sizes, jewelry new and old, toys that people’s children had out grown, tools, hardware, paintings, prints, dishes, records, videos, DVDs, CDs, cassettes, electronics, helmets, games, books, puzzles, collectors items, beanie babies, and even McDonald’s toys from the Happy Meals were for sale at various places. Anything you can imagine finding at a regular garage sale was there, and anything (except rides) that you would expect to find at a carnival was there too.
For over 30 years the World’s Largest Garage Sale has grown from a weekend of the towns people having their garage sale on the same weekend, to a crowd drawn in by what has essentially become a combined flea market, garage sale, and craft fair with live music, great food, and fun for the whole family. People can find great bargains and, as already mentioned, a huge array of goods for sale. It is also an opportunity for the talent of the region to play to a larger crowd with a time slot on the grand stand, and for friends, family, and new people to experience the joy of the Adirondack Autumn. It was great fun this year, maybe next year you should plan on an Adirondack Getaway the first weekend in October.
