If you are someone that purchases Hostess Twinkies regularly, you most likely have noticed by now that on most Hostess Twinkies boxes, there is a picture of Superman. Why Hostess even bothered picking Superman is something of a mystery to me. Sure, Superman is one of the most recognizable superhero characters ever created, but Hostess did not even bother to spruce up the Twinkies in any way like they did with the Hostess GloBalls, which feature Green Lantern on the box and sport Green Lantern’s colors or the Hostess Flash Cakes, which also feature colors present on Flash’s costume.
The Superman Twinkies however look just like regular Twinkies. Perhaps Hostess is playing into the running joke that has been around for decades that a Twinkie, much like Superman, cannot be destroyed and that a Twinkie consists of ingredients that, also like Superman, are not of this world, but other than those two things, I cannot think of any other connection that the character of Superman shares with a Hostess Twinkie. Unlike with the other Hostess Snacks that feature Justice League superhero characters, the Superman and Twinkie pairing just seems pointless and lazy, with no effort at all having been made to differentiate a Superman Twinkie from the average, everyday Hostess Twinkie.
The Twinkies that come in a box with a picture of Superman look and taste the same as the Twinkies that come in a box without a picture of Superman. The same sponge cake flavor and texture is present and the same white and rich cream fills the interior of the Twinkie. Even if you are a fan of Superman, I see no point in purchasing a box of these Twinkies unless you are simply out of Twinkies and would like to purchase some more. There is no reason to make a special purchase though, unless you like collecting Superman-themed products and intend on saving the box.
The Twinkies themselves have not been given a super makeover though, which is unfortunate, because it would have been fun to see Hostess Twinkies get spruced up and decorated for a couple of months. Even if all Hostess did was add some special coloring to the Twinkies or made each Twinkie with the letter “S” engraved on the sponge cake, at least that would have been something that would have resulted in a somewhat unique, Superman-themed product. Hostess did not bother though and so, an opportunity was missed. While admittedly, some minor cosmetic adjustments to a Twinkie is not going to alter the taste or enjoyment one derives from eating a Twinkie, such changes would have been pleasant to see nonetheless.
The picture of Superman on the Twinkies box is eye-catching, but once the box is opened and the typical Twinkies are revealed, any connection with Superman is lost. The Twinkies are still golden in color, they are still made out of sponge cake and still offer the same white and sweet cream filling that they have for many years. Superman appears on the box, but all traces of him disappear faster than a speeding bullet once a Hostess Twinkie is pulled out, and that is a disappointing shame.
