It might be old but the NES is one of the best consoles ever made. It is amazing but after all these years the NES can still be a lot of fun to play. Getting a NES out for a party is a lot of fun. Anyone who grew up in the 80’s or 90’s will enjoy a night of nostalgia playing the NES again. These games are some great NES games to play at a party.
If you can get an original working NES console that is the best. If you are willing to put some money into the machine you can get it to work better by buying a pin connector. You can find them online on sites like ebay. The pin connector will make the NES work better then it ever did. The original NES is the best option for two reasons. The nostalgia with the original machines is higher. The other reason is new systems do not use the NES controllers so you can not use fun peripherals like the the power pad or the zapper. You do have other options then the NES though. There are companies that make new NES, they even often play SNES and even Sega games. Some portable devices use roms and can be played on the TV but those are one player only. The computer can be used but you may want to connect to the TV or a projector. You will be limited on a computer to one player unless you get special USB controllers and you will not be able to play peripherals.
This is a game that needs the use of the power pad. This game is like the original DDR. Except instead of dancing you run. It is great exercise and great fun. You can see how long until players get down and start pounding the pad with hands instead of using their feet. It will be like old times.
Super Mario Brothers
Either SMB 1 or 3 would be good. The original lets players switch every turn. The sequel is not like the other Mario games and was not even the sequel from Japan but another game from Japan that switched characters. It also is single player making it a bad party game. Mario 3 is a game anyone who was a kid during the 90’s will remember. There was a video game made for the movie it was so big. Two players allow for people to switch off. You can even go into a mini-game and have both players play. Using the mini-game to get extra lives is a good trick. If you have lots of people you can just switch players between stages.
Ice Climbers is good for older players. Older players may remember it from the arcade. The good thing about Ice Climbers is that it is two players and they play at the same time. Once a team plays a level you can then switch players so everyone gets a turn.
This is another tow player game that was popular. Both players can play at the same time and players can switch between screens. There were multiple Double Dragon games so you can pick your favorite.
Battletoads was one of the toughest games for the NES. If you want a real two player challenge this is it. Battletoads was hard on your own but with a second player it is nearly impossible. There is even an urban legend that it has never been beaten by two players without cheating.
This is a must at any NES game night. No one who grew back in the day will forget the Konami code to get plenty of extra lives. There is even a shirt with the Konami code on it. If you do not have a game genie the Konami code should be enough to get you and a friend through the entire game. Another game with two players on screen and you could switch between stages or between deaths depending how your friends want to play it. This is one that brings back memories to all.
The NES was one of the most popular and most influential game systems. For many this was the first system they played. Even if you did play something older like the Atari 2600 the NES is the oldest you will still be able to play and have fun with. For a nostalgic change you should throw a NES party.
