Life is about making priorities and then working diligently to accomplish those priorities that have floated to the top of the list. The vast majority of Americans put fixing the economy at number one on their to do list. By default, high levels of unemployment are a huge drain on the economy. Creating additional tax revenues and supporting consumer spending is an ipso facto conclusion from job creation. One would expect our leadership to be making an all out attack on fixing unemployment and yet it is a subject that barely gets mentioned. It is a hot potato. Someone needs to be able to handle the hot potato, and that person should be the President of the United States . Sadly this does not appear to be the case as the word “unemployment” rarely passes his lips.
The unemployed and our 99ers in particular need a Champion. They need someone with position, power, and opportunity to stand up and take up the fight. This is a just cause that is worthy of national attention and a true Champion. If the President needs to put on a pair of gloves to be able to handle this hot potato, then so be it, put the gloves on. Millions of Americans that have lost their jobs by no fault of their own, that have seen their unemployment run out during the worst economic conditions since the Great Depression, are left dazed that no political figure with any clout seems willing to take up their cause. Dazed that the leader of our nation almost refuses to acknowledge their existence. Dazed that they are tossed around like the hot potato that nobody seems to want to hang onto.
At what point will our leaders in general and President Obama in particular begin to address the fact that the elephant is in the room? You cannot reasonably expect an economic recovery when millions upon millions are jobless. You cannot reasonably expect an economic recovery when you ignore the fact that millions upon millions of 99ers have lost all financial support and are living a life of horror. These are not the ingredients for an economic recovery; they are the ingredients for an economic disaster. The President needs to step up, and step up in a big way, and pressure Congress to stop the partisan bickering and take care of the nations business – supporting our millions of unemployed and creating jobs.
The unemployed are hoping that with the midterm elections behind us that our President will now focus on the number one problem facing our country today – the economy and the millions of unemployed that go along with it. It is difficult at this juncture to envision President Obama changing course and passionately and thoroughly pressing this issue if past actions are any barometer. But it needs to happen, and it needs to happen now. Polls indicate that he would have the bi-partisan support of a vast majority of the nation. Why the hesitation now that the elections are over? It is time for him to stop delegating and to start pontificating! America needs leadership and the time for him to step up is now!
