Tiger Woods’ divorce from Elin Nordegren Woods became final on Monday, August 23, 2010 just nine months after the jaw-dropping Woods’ scandal unraveled in front of a nearly insatiable public. And just a year ago, Mel Gibson’s divorce from ex-wife Robyn became final during the summer.
While it is nearly certain that Tiger Woods has a prenup, it is known that Gibson did not and after 28 years of marriage, Robyn was entitled to half of his estimated $950 million fortune.
For both celebrities, however, the actual divorce settlement amount remains unknown; Wood’s because the dust has not yet settled, and Gibson’s due to Robyn and Mel’s request that the amount remain private (which it has).
However, it is more than likely that Woods and Gibson’s’ divorce settlements will top the list of most expensive celebrity divorces.
To put it in perspective, here’s a list of some of the most expensive celebrity divorces ever. Before you read, however, keep in mind the following:
• The list compiled takes the most common numbers reported in the articles reviewed for this work;
• A celebrity is defined as a well-known person, so you may not recognize all these names as they do not all hail from Hollywood; and finally,
• This list includes only those amounts that are known or are fairly certain. Many divorce settlement amounts, such as the one between Casino giant Steve Wynn and his now-ex-wife, Elaine Wynn, are sealed to the public thus this list may not be completely accurate because of the unknowns.
Rupert Murdoch, the Australian-born American media mogul and founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of News Corporation, paid his ex, Anna, $1.7 billion mostly in assets in 1999.
Adam Khashoggi’s ex, Soraya, scored a nice $874 million in an out-of-court settlement in 1982. Khashoggi made his money as an international arms dealer, and then through Triad, a company that owned and managed banks, hotels and real estate.
Craig McCaw, founder of McCaw Cellular (now a part of AT&T) and Clearwire Corporation, handed over around $460 million when they divorced in 1995.
Roman Abramovich fell for a beautiful Aeroflot flight attendant in 1990 but divorced her 17 years later at a cost of $300 million, but don’t feel badly for Roman. He is still worth nearly $19 billion.
Michael Jordan forked over approximately $168 million, a seven-acre estate, and custody of three children he had with Juanita Jordan in 2006.
Neil Diamond divorced his second wife, Marcia Murphy, and gave her $150 million. Diamond said that Murphy “deserved” half of his fortune because she’d been through “thick and thin” with him in their 33 years together.
And then there are the other celebrity divorces which did not exceed the $100 million mark. For example, most remember the Steven Spielberg and Amy Irving split which cost the director some $100 million and then Harrison Ford’s $85 million payoff after 18 years of marriage to Melissa Mathison.
There was also Kevin Costner’s $80 million split from Cindy Silva, his college sweetheart, after 16 years, Michael Douglas’ $45 million separation package from Diandra after 20 years of marriage, and then Ted Danson’s mere $30 million package deal from Casey Coates which many speculate came about as a result of Danson’s relationship with Whoopi Goldberg as they filmed “Made in America.”
