If someone from the future had the technology, what time period would they choose to travel back to? Would it be a pivotal moment in history, or just some random time? For that matter, would the time traveler even have control to choose what period they could go back to, like in Back to the Future, or would they just be jumping back in time, not knowing what year it was until they got there?
On October 28th, 2010, Time Newsfeed posted an article about a filmmaker who was watching classic Charlie Chaplin film footage and came across something so strange he had to keep watching it over and over again. Then, he screened this footage to 100 people to see what they thought. The film was from the 1920’s, and the footage had a woman in the background talking on what appears to be a mobile device, very similar to today’s cell phone. The only problem is that cell phones did not exist in the 1920’s. The easiest explanation for this strange phenomenon is that the person in this film is a time traveler using mobile communications technology from the future.1
In the movie, Napoleon Dynamite, Uncle Rico is the crazy uncle who is obsessed with his glory days from playing football. He is so convinced that if he could go back in time, he could take his team to the state championship. So they buy a time machine and insert the magic crystals to power the device, and plug it in. Napoleon is the first to test it out and he gets electrocuted. His desire to go to the future blinds him from the risk involved. We later find out in the movie that Uncle Rico has also attempted to use the time machine to go back to the past, and has sustained similar injuries as Napoleon. The problem that they experienced, is that they just didn’t have the right technology for time travel.
We can safely assume that no one in today’s time has the technology to travel through time. So this technology would have to come from the future. The next question is: Do the future time travelers have a set of rules or guidelines about not letting the people of today get a hold of the technology of tomorrow? Could we handle such technology or would we just destroy ourselves?
