Refrigerators keep our food cool and fresher longer so they are a very important appliance to have in a typical household. They also run 24 hours a day using electricity all the time and keeping our electric bills high. As long as your refrigerator is working well you don’t think about replacing it but if your refrigerator is not energy efficient you may actually save yourself some money on your electric bill if you replace it with a new energy efficient one.
Once you have decided to purchase a new refrigerator think about the size you need. Get the smallest size you can without compromising your refrigeration needs. A good rule for refrigerator size is to get a 17 cubic foot refrigerator for a family of 2 and add another cubic foot for each extra person that is living in your home.
If you have a freezer or a second refrigerator in your basement or garage you should get a new refrigerator that will be large enough to accommodate what that one has in it as well. If you can get one good Energy Star refrigerator to replace all of your refrigeration needs you will save money.
Skip the automatic ice maker if you can live without it. An ice maker can add as much as 20% to your electric bill then a refrigerator without one. You can get some nice ice cube trays to fill by hand to help save money. Some ice cube trays come in nifty shapes like stars or animals. You can add variety to your ice cubes.
You need to consider what type of freezer you want for your needs. A refrigerator with a top freezer is the best at saving energy and I find them to be the handiest at getting my frozen goods out. The type of refrigerator with a bottom freezer is next in line at being energy efficient. A refrigerator that is a side-by-side has the worst amount of energy saving since it has such large openings that allow for cool air to escape.
Recently I have seen refrigerator with clear doors so you can see what is in your refrigerator without opening the doors. This is great if you don’t mind seeing the things in your refrigerator that are messy. Being able to see what is in your refrigerator may even help you keep it cleaner since you won’t be able to stand looking at the moldy, drippy containers that are in there.
Your new refrigerator should be an Energy Star meaning it saves more energy then the typical refrigerator. You can read more about buying a new energy efficient refrigerator at http://www.the-eco-market.com/eco-friendly-refrigerators.html.
