I have terrible insomnia that plagues me almost every night. I get to the point where the boredom is worse than the actual inability to sleep. I’ve tried everything under the sun but nothing seems to help me fall asleep, so I’m left night after night to twiddle my thumbs and wait till sleep actually comes.
I’ve watched every rerun known to man and successfully Googled almost every word in the dictionary. I know they say the web is virtually endless, but let me tell you, I believe I have found the end of it after years of sleepless nights and boredom! Now that I’ve exhausted the internet I’ve been searching for things to occupy my time. Below are a few ideas that can fill your time after you have given up on TV and the internet.
I actually got my start here on AC by filling my time by writing. While my family is all snuggled in their beds resting peacefully I write a couple articles before I feel tired. In fact, I’m up in the middle of the night right now with insomnia writing this article. Research, write, and post your work on websites like AC to get paid for your boredom. It’s not a lot of money but at least you can say you are being productive while praying for sleep.
Spend those ongoing hours releasing your artistic side. I have found that painting actually helps me relax and helps the yawns come faster. If you aren’t comfortable with paint try drawling or photo editing. Great sites like picnick.com let you get creative with your favorite photos. One night I made an entire album for my kid’s baby book. Craft booking is also a good time consumer.
The “Cleaning Fairy” Has Come
Sometimes you just need to release that boredom with a little elbow grease. Midnight is a great time to scrub those kitchen floors. You don’t have to worry about everyone leaving foot prints on your sparkling clean floor once you’re done. I also do most of my laundry in the middle of the night as well. There’s nothing like quiet time while you clean up. I can hear the crickets chirping now. In the morning when your family wakes up they’ll think the cleaning fairy came to visit over night.
Continue Your Education
One of the best things you could do to fill those hours of boredom is to get an education. There are hundreds of accredited online colleges out there. I have been “attending” an online university for almost two years now. While everyone else is sleeping I’m doing my school work and will graduate soon with a Bachelors of Arts degree. I filled my insomnia stricken nights with textbooks and research papers, but have managed to graduate faster through an online school than going to a traditional college. See, sometimes sleepless nights do pay off in the long run.
Insomnia has taken over my life but I haven’t let the boredom that accompanies it take over me. These are just a few of my favorite things to do to fill the long sleepless hours of the night.
