Treadmills have many benefits. They offer you the chance to run regardless of any weather condition, at any time and provide a safe environment for your run. However, one of the major downfalls of treadmills is that the stable surface doesn’t provide you with a good workout for your supporting muscles and there is little natural change in your stride. So, if you want the most out of your treadmill workout then you are going to have to vary your routine.
It’s easy to overlook the importance of putting intervals into your workout. They will help to challenge you and depending on the machine you’re on, you can set the time and speed to exactly what you want, pushing yourself harder than you might if you were on the road.
Running on an Incline
One of the great things about working out on a treadmill is that you can choose when you run hills. You won’t be able to simulate the full strides of running back down the other side, but the bonus is that your knees will probably love you more for that fact.
You can set the incline on your machine and you’ll be able to get all the powerful stride benefits you would going up the hills in your own neighborhood.
If your ankles, knees or hips start to get a little on the sore side, or you know that something is wrong from sharp pain and are afraid to run through it, you can hop right off. If you’re at the gym then get on another machine and continue to plug away at that cardio. If you’re at home then try something else to keep your heart rate up or opt out for a few circuits with some weights.
Treadmill running offers a lot of benefits, but it’s easy to get bored quickly and if you’re not careful you could be overlooking some of the most important features of a good run. But if you plan ahead and use your machine to its full capacity then you’ll never notice the difference of not being outside.
