September is known as Better Breakfast Month, which means if you haven’t been feeding your child breakfast September is a great time to start!
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for your child and yourself. It has been shown that children who eat breakfast do better in school, they don’t tire as easily, and they aren’t as irritable as children that don’t have breakfast. Let’s face it, as adults we get grumpy when we have to start the day off with our stomach growling so why would it be any different for our children?
Types of breakfast to serve you child
I know mornings with kids can be rough; it takes a good ten minutes to pull them out of bed then another ten finding their clothes and making sure they are dressed in everything, by the time everyone is completely dressed and packed up you have one minute before they are late for the bus! It sounds hectic and it is hectic but it’s no excuse to send them to school without breakfast. No one says breakfast has to be created in the kitchen using unknown ingredients and look good enough to be placed on the front of some food magazine, it just needs to fill up their little tummies.
According to the American Dietetic Association a number of these choice can be a not only a quick breakfast but also healthy:
Ready to eat cereal with fruit
Bagel with cheese
Fruit filled breakfast bars
Toasted waffle with fruit toppings
However if these quick fixes aren’t on your child’s want list then it’s okay to feed them anything…even pizza!
For parents of younger children it may help the breakfast process go a little smoother if you make it fun for them.
Collage of breakfast items.
Depending on the child’s age either have them cut out breakfast items from a magazine or you would need to do this yourself for very young kids. After enough breakfast items have been found let the child glue them however they want onto a piece of construction paper. Place the collage on the refrigerator so they can see every morning what they need to eat to have a good day.
How many kids don’t love eatable jewelry? Take cereal that has a hole in the middle, like fruit loops or cheerios and place a string through each piece of cereal. Your child can make necklaces, rings, or even bracelets!
The only way to really get your children eating breakfast is by being a great role model. Yes, that means in order for your children to take eating breakfast serious, they must see you eating it as well. What better way to start off your day then eating a quick breakfast with your kids? By the end of the day your kids will be feeling so much better and you’ll be the best parent for supporting a healthy lifestyle.
