If you find your car windshield completely frozen over with ice or frost there are a few things you should know. You can prevent frost and ice from forming in several ways, but usually they can be a hassle or cost a lot of money. So the first thing you should know how to do is scrape your window properly.
Before you do anything else you will need to open your car door. If it is stuck you can try bumping it with your hip then pulling again. If this does not work try another door. You do not want to break the handle by pulling to hard. Once you have gotten inside your vehicle you will want to start your car. This will give your car a chance to warm up before you go, and for your defrost to start working.
You will notice that on most scrapers there is a ridged side and then a scraping side. The ridged side is used to scratch through tough ice. If you just have frost it is best to just use the scraper side. After you have made long gashes up and down in the ice on the window, you should take the scraper and scratch across your marks to break off the greatest amount of ice, with the least amount of effort.
There are many ways to scrape your window. The way I like to do it is scraping my driver’s side window, then the back window then the passenger side window, and finally the windshield. This will give the windshield a little time to melt and be easier to scrape along the curve of the windshield. Also you can check the tires as you go along.
Prevent having frost or ice on your windshield, you can cover them with a tarp. Sometimes the tarp can freeze onto the windshield, so it is not a good idea to use the tarp in freezing rain. Also this will of course only be able to protect the parts of your windshield the tarp actually covers. Car covers will do the same thing, but are much more difficult to remove. They also can rip, and be more prone to getting frozen onto your automobile.
Another way is to park your car in a garage or other type of cover. The frost will not be able to accumulate on your windshield that way.
If you do not have an ice scraper in your car you can use a CD. Just make sure it is already to scratched to play, or is worthless in some other way. If you are by a department store you can probably pick up and AOL trial CD that is free and use it for a scraper if you have no other means to scrape your windshield.
