Craft materials rescued from the garbage, like jars, cans and cardboard, often seem to make the best décor. Sometimes you can only make simplistic things from the salvaged items, but other times, you can make something really very elegant. Something in between simple and elegant is a useful but unconventional coaster made from bathroom tissue rolls. Although you wouldn’t think cardboard would make a very nice coaster it really does!
Smash the cardboard roll flat and begin cutting it into sections from one long side to the other. Cut the pieces narrow, or a little wider, but make them all the same width. The wider you cut the strips the taller the coaster will stand off the table. There is no set amount to cut; the design you choose will determine how many strips you cut.
Turn each strip over so that you can see the open side. Spread the two pieces apart, as far as you want, to create the shape you desire. You can leave them really narrow, as they are when you first cut them, or spread them out to be a little wider. You can pinch the ends together to make a pointed petals shape or you can round the ends.
Position the “petals” so that you have several of them in a circle, with one end meeting in the center and the other end pointing outward. If the cardboard pieces are slivers you’ll need a few; if they’re a little wider you’ll only need less. Glue each cardboard piece to the next to form the finished circle. Spray paint the flower shapes and they suddenly look nothing like cardboard. In fact, if you paint them gold or silver they actually look very elegant.
To make something a little different and much prettier place a bead in each cardboard strip, at one end, where the fold of the cardboard is. Open the fold a little, apply the glue to the fold and around it, then position the bead on the fold and with the holes facing the cardboard strips. Make all the beads the same or mix different colors. Do a one-bead design or add more beads down the petal.
When you’re finished creating the base design for the coaster you’ll need to use a material on top. Cut a circle of felt, foam, cork or even plastic from a milk jug and mount it on top of the floral design. Make the coasters with no beads, and a circle of cardboard glued to the top, and they’re disposable. The cheap coasters are a decorative way to keep from tossing all those empty cardboard tubes.
