The prospect of a new 13,000-square-foot grocery store on the ground floor of Toren Tower really is no prospect at all, even if they should land a high-end grocery store. Considering a 55,000-square-foot ShopRite is going to be just up the road in the old Navy Yard in less than a couple of years, and Pathmark is just down the road, too, any new grocery store in the building is going to be just as redundant as the property name –Toren is Dutch for tower — and isn’t going to last too long.
The Toren’s 240 units, which as of yet nor in the foreseeable future will be completely filled, aren’t going to sustain a full-service grocery store, either, and neither will it generate business from the other nearby, half-empty luxury condominium towers since there’s no available parking and the area isn’t exactly conducive to foot traffic.
