Okay, there’s still time for more the best internet memes of 2010 to get their big break on the interwebs, but since they come and go so quickly, I figure I better get an article up sooner rather than later to avoid making everything on this list look too old (plus the lack of the best internet memes of 2010 to come will give the many experts out there on internet phenomena something to complain about later in the year). Anyway, from celebrities to songs to cigars, enjoy reliving some of the best internet memes of 2010 one more time (then please find some way to erase them from the web!):
Double Rainbow Video – All it took was Jimmy Kimmel tweeting a YouTube video link of a double rainbow reaction to create an even bigger one on the web. The audio reaction of a man that goes by “Hungry Bear” to one of nature’s most colorful masterpieces was hilarious enough to inspire one of the most popular meme songs of 2010 featuring his thought-provoking question: “what does it mean?”. His awed and sometimes orgasmic-sounding voice also left viewers with questions of their own: Was he stoned? Does he have a rainbow fetish? Or is he just a colorful sort of guy? We may not understand him, but it’s our own awe at his behavior that makes his video one of the best internet memes of 2010.
Sad Keanu – And here’s one of the best internet memes of 2010 for fans of Photoshop, as a sad Keanu Reeves sitting on a bench and eating a sandwich found himself next to Forrest Gump, alone on the moon, with the work crew on a high-rise building, with a herd of cats, and probably millions of other places (sorry, I didn’t check the whole internet for an accurate number). Vulture actually asked a somewhat clueless Keanu about what he thought about the meme, but he was unaware of just how big this thing really is, man! But since he says it sounds like good, clean fun, you don’t have to feel guilty about taking pleasure in his pain! (Here’s to hoping they spoof the meme in a ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure’ sequel; that would be most triumphant).
Strutting Leo – And here’s another of the best celebrity internet memes involving Photoshop. An image of Leonardo DiCaprio strutting down the street was taken during the filming of ‘Inception’, but since then, he’s been jauntily strolling through disaster scene after disaster scene, even making an appearance with sad Keanu on a few occasions (honestly, I think I’d prefer seeing a lot of these ‘shopped movies with memes within memes within memes to his dream within a dream within a dream disappointment).
Cigar Guy – This is one of the best mysterious internet memes of 2010, as a shaggy-haired mustachioed man with a cigar dangling from his mouth got more attention than the once-in-a-lifetime photo of Tiger Woods he found himself in. After having more fun with Photoshop by facebombing historical moments with Cigar Guy’s mug, the internet turned to trying to figure out just who he was. As it turns out, he’s just a golf fan who dressed up like his idol, golf star Miguel Angel Jimenez. And so after the mystery was solved and the Cigar Guy didn’t end up being the most interesting man in the world, the internet went on it’s merry way waiting for the next best meme.
Bros Icing Bros – This is one of the few internet memes that has actually taken over real life, thanks to the website BrosIcingBros.com. Basically “icing” is a fratboy game that involves giving someone a Smirnoff Ice. Sounds harmless enough, right? Well, according to the rules, you have to take a knee and down it, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. It’s also a good idea to carry a Smirnoff Ice around with you at all times so that you can “Ice Block” your pals, if needed. Of course the fun part is coming up with ridiculous, web-worthy ways and places to Ice one another. Okay, so it’s not one of the best internet memes in my opinion, but it’s popularity has earned it a slot here (I’m just waiting to see what happens when the Ice is replaced with Four Loko).
Pants on the Ground – This is one of the oldest of the best internet memes of 2010, dating back to the time when ‘American Idol’ contestants didn’t have to be afraid of wandering into Steven Tyler’s massive mouth and getting lost forever. If ‘American Idol’ featured more contestants singing their own original songs like General Larry Platt’s ode to belts, perhaps it could actually be considered a form of entertainment (you know this year producers are going to be scrambling to produce and play up a new meme for 2011).
The Man Your Man Could Smell Like – Speaking of the best manufactured memes of 2010, Old Spice hit it out of the park with their manly new spokesman. Actor Isaiah Mustafa wooed the ladies in multiple Old Spice ads, making their own men feel inadequate by forcing them to compare his healthy, horse-riding self to their couch cruising insignificant others. His newfound fame has landed the former NFL wide receiver on cakes, in a Sesame Street parody, and in a Jennifer Aniston movie, and, while he might have hung up his towel as the Old Spice guy, it looks like Isaiah Mustafa will continue to spice up our lives in other ways.
The Bed Intruder – Antoine Dodson became an internet superstar in one of the best (but most bizarre) internet memes of 2010. Sure Antoine Dodson’s video rant uploaded onto YouTube straight from a local news station about how a man was “raping everybody out here” shouldn’t have been funny, but it did inspire another of the biggest auto-tune internet meme songs of 2010, cleverly titled “The Bed Intruder Song”. Luckily, Antoine Dodson has made enough money from the song (the creators of it have split the profits with him) to move his family out of the projects. However, no word on if the would-be rapist that attacked his sister has been caught (and that’s what really matters, right?).
The HOPA Girl – This may not have been as big as the other best internet memes on this list, but I figure this hoax going on about the same time as the whole Steven Slater ordeal is more deserving of a slot here (plus I’ve got to show a little meme love for the ladies). Basically, “Jenny” , dubbed a HOPA by her boss, supposedly quit her job via a series of snarky comments on a dry erase board. Her photos and story quickly spread across Facebook, but it wasn’t long before the Chive was joyfully claiming that they’d pulled a fast one us with a little help from an Angelina Jolie look-alike. And between her hoax and Steven Slater’s legendary slide, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more over-the-top ways of quitting hit the web (but that was so two months ago).
Time Traveler Caught on Film – I would say that, thanks to one of the best internet memes of 2010, it’s nice that people have recently been rediscovering Charlie Chaplin, if it wasn’t for the fact that they’re only referencing the great director, actor, and musician because of a video clip taken from the DVD extras of ‘The Circus’. A short clip shows an old woman walking and appearing to talk on cell phone. So she must be a time traveler caught on film, right? And maybe she’s not just any time traveler…but an alien one! Never mind the fact that, if people or aliens could travel in time or between planets, they’d likely at least use a form of hands-free technology for communication. Anyway, it turns out that the woman was probably using a Siemens 1924 hearing aid, not a cell phone. Some might argue that she appears to be talking in it, but she could be chewing or moving her mouth in the manner that toothless old folk sometimes do in old movies. Or maybe she’s old and senile and talking to herself. Whatever the case, the fact that so many people seemed to believe that she really could be a time traveler gives me very little faith in my fellow man (we could possibly be regrowing organs and putting men on Mars, and all we care about is an old woman trying to walk down the street without getting run over by the whippersnappers attending a Charlie Chaplin film premiere. Really?).
So whether you enjoy a good internet mystery, poking fun at a celebrity, or being awed by the beauty of nature, the best internet memes of 2010 are here to amaze you for a mere matter of minutes.
