Which celebrities with beards have the most iconic facial hair? From the good, the bad, to the ugly, all these celebrities had to do was lay off the razor to raise eyebrows with their tuft-growing talents:
Zach Galifianakis – His fluffy face stole our hearts in ‘The Hangover’, and we’ve recently been treated to more of his manly mandible mane in another comedy involving a baby, ‘Due Date’. So what’s next for Zach Galifianakis’ very funny facial hair? It’s going to continue its trek across America in ‘The Hangover 2’, as one of the most beloved celebrities with beards continues to inspire others to grow beards so they can share his special kind of grizzly grin that the rest of the world has to squint to see.
Joaquin Phoenix – When it comes to celebrities whose beards have helped make them more famous, Joaquin Phoenix’s full-on facial hair really takes the kooky cake. Before he grew out a beard and had himself filmed trying to pursue a rapping career in ‘I’m Still Here’, he was best known as beloved actor River Phoenix’s little brother. He later lost his wild look to revisit David Letterman and apologize for his previous bizarre behavior on the show (filmed to be a part of his film). Unfortunately, there’s no word on what the fresh-faced actor will be doing next, but he and Zach Galifianakis could definitely pass as bearded bros if he ever decides to let his facial hair regrow.
Spencer Pratt – One of the most disturbing celebrities with beards of 2010 has to be Spencer Pratt, who rocked a frightening albino grizzly man look with his flesh-colored face-eater. The former reality show star spent part of 2010 pretending to divorce his wife and sell the greatest horror movie of all time, a sex tape starring himself and his plastic partner. He eventually lost his see-through face shield sometime before Halloween (as well as a good portion of his publicity), choosing instead to cover his head with a plastic alien mask for the holiday (Heidi apparently realized she didn’t need any more plastic on her mug, opting for her version of au naturale).
Conan O’Brien – Conan gets extra points for being one of the only redheaded celebrities with beards in Hollywood, first lighting his facial follicles afire in 2008 during the writers’ strike, along with the likes of David Letterman. He said goodbye to his bushy bud after the strike was over, but it’s back for 2010 with a fiery vengeance. So will the beard, which makes great camouflage for his baby face, be here to stay? Let’s hope so; it definitely makes Conan look manlier, like his barbarian bro, and a little bit like the next man on this list (now if he’d only do something with that red tidal wave on his head…)
Chuck Norris – No celebrities with beards have one as tough as this former Texas Ranger. In fact, Chuck Norris’ beard is so strong it’s dangerous; I’ve heard he uses it to grate cheese for his own version of a salad (apparently he uses slices of bacon in place of lettuce and bacon grease in place of salad dressing; that’s a fact).
ZZ Top – These three rockers with a love of the Lone Star State’s most legendary brothel were way ahead of the beard trend, being some of the only celebrities to rock full-length chin frocks. And here’s a fun bit of trivia: drummer Frank Beard is the only member of the band that doesn’t have a beard (and this is really a fact, unlike that little tidbit above about the Chuckster).
Billy Mays – This late, great pitchman had one of the most popular celebrity beards, thanks to its perfect jet black cover. Fortunately, it didn’t temper down his booming voice, making this infomercial star’s vocals some of the most recognizable on TV (the low, low price of $19.99 just isn’t the same without him).
Brad Pitt – When celebrities like Brad Pitt cover their pretty faces with scraggly scruff, the world takes notice. And so this part of the list is dedicated to Hollywood’s hottest hunks that have covered their mugs with hairy chunks. First up is Brad Pitt, who grew his messy mane (gray and all) out of boredom. Luckily, a movie role banished the beard earlier in 2010, giving women back the beard-free Brad that they know and love. But a movie role likely inspired the next celebrity beard on this list, a look that Brad Pitt rocked with his facial locks at one point.
Johnny Depp – When it comes to funky celebrity beards, Johnny Depp has one of the best. However, his chin’s double tuft, which has been spotted in two little braids, was likely grown to play the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies. However, on land or at cinematic sea, there’s just something about this signature look that definitely suits Johnny.
Robert Pattinson – There are men who can rock beards, and there are those that cannot. The world found out which of these categories Robert Pattinson falls in when he traded his sparkly skin for a fuzzy face in 2010. Unfortunately, when the vampire tried to transform in a werewolf, his facial hair ended up resembling Spencer Pratt’s a little bit too much (but I’ll give him a few extra points for it being a little more on the dark side).
So whether their beards are grown from boredom; are a fixture on their face; or just fo laziness in giving up on grooming for awhile, these beards of celebrities have definitely grown on us (sometimes in a good way; sometimes like a fungus).
