During WCW’s tenure on the wrestling world, every October meant it was time for Halloween Havoc, an annual themed pay per view featuring wrestling superstars like Sting, Hulk Hogan, Macho Man Randy Savage, and Bill Goldberg.
Every Halloween Havoc pay per view was filled with dark-themed matches, weird storylines, and memorable moments, including a large collection of main events.
While some main events were forgettable, five of them stand out as classic matches and a huge part of WCW history.
Sting vs. Sid Vicious – 1990: Sid Vicious is a multi-time world champion, but he has never quite lived up to his hype and potential. In one of his biggest marquee matches Vicious took on the face of WCW, Sting.
Their battle raged on in and out of the ring until the two wrestlers drifted off backstage. Moments later, Sid Vicious reemerged with a different looking Sting.
This “Sting” was returned to the ring and eventually pinned. Just as Sid was awarded with the victory, the real Sting returned and the match restarted. Sting ended up pinning Sid and won the match.
Sting vs. Jake “The Snake” Roberts – 1992: Two years later and Sting returned to the Halloween Havoc main event. This was the first of many main events to feature the “Spin the Wheel, Make a Deal” format much like the WWE Raw Roulette.
Their match was a “Coal Miner’s Glove” match that featured a gloved weapon on top of a pole. The glove proved influential throughout the match, but it was Roberts that defeated himself in the end. After receiving a snake bite from his own snake, Sting took advantage and covered Roberts for the win.
Big Van Vader vs.Cactus Jack -1993: After spinning the wheel, a “Texas Death Match” was chosen for Vader and Cactus Jack. Essentially a last man standing match, these two battled all over the arena, using multiple weapons at their disposal.
Using his manager Harley Race, Vader applied a DDT to Cactus Jack on a chair, and the ref counted to 10 as Race electrocuted Jack until the count completed. Vader proved he could go up against the king of hardcore in this victory.
“Hollywood” Hogan vs. Macho Man – 1996: In another classic battle, Hogan once again took on his long-time rival and former friend Macho Man. Unlike previous battles, the two were interrupted by The “Giant”, aka WWE’s Big Show.
The Giant choke slammed Macho Man onto the mat and placed Hogan on him for the victory. After the match ended, Roddy Piper rushed to the ring to confront Hogan and make his first WCW appearance.
“Hollywood” Hogan vs. The Warrior – 1998: After their Wrestlemania VI match-up, Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior were due for another match against each other. After weeks of hype, these two were scheduled to meet at the 1998 Halloween Havoc.
The match itself does not compare to their first encounter, but the hype and build-up of the two stars made it worth it. If it was not for the cheap ending and interference, the match could have had a lot more going for it and be seen as more of a classic.
It still stands as one of WCW’s best Halloween Havoc main events though because it is one of the last times these two met in a wrestling ring.
