One of three highly successful NBA franchises in Texas, the Houston Rockets entered the league in 1967. In their history, nine Rockets have dished out more than 2,000 assists with the team for a great deal of parity on the leader board. The Houston Rockets’ all-time assist leaders include a pair of Hall of Famers, Calvin Murphy and legendary center Hakeem Olajuwon.
5. Kenny Smith: 2,457 assists
Kenny “The Jet” Smith ranks fifth on the Houston Rockets’ all-time assist leaders list. Before becoming one of the faces of the NBA on TNT, Smith manned the point for the Rockets during their two championship seasons in 1994 and 1995. His best statistical season came in 1990-91 when he averaged 17.7 points, 7.1 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. In six seasons in Houston he averaged 5.3 assists and for his career as a whole he totaled 4,073 assists.
4. Mike Newlin: 2,581 assists
Mike Newlin was a guard for Houston from 1971 to 1979 and he is fourth among the Houston Rockets’ all-time assist leaders. In eight seasons with the Rockets, Newlin averaged 14.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per contest. He averaged a career best 5.6 assists along with 18.6 points in the 1975-76 campaign. After leaving Houston, Newlin had back-to-back seasons of more than 20 points per game in New Jersey.
3. Hakeem Olajuwon: 2,992 assists
The greatest player in franchise history, Hakeem Olajuwon ranks third on the list of Houston Rockets’ all-time assist leaders. Olajuwon was one of the elite center in the NBA as he played for the Rockets from 1984 to 2001. He was a great scorer, rebounder, and defensive presence, and he added three or more assists per game six times. Olajuwon notched averages of 22.5 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 3.2 blocks, and 1.8 steals per game. He is the Rockets’ all-time leader in points, rebounds, steals, and blocks.
2. Allen Leavell: 3,339 assists
Allen Leavell was the Rockets’ point guard throughout the 1980s and he ranks second on the Houston Rockets’ all-time assist leaders list. Despite falling to the late fifth round of the 1979 NBA Draft, Leavell earned a roster spot in Houston and he became the number one point guard almost immediately. Leavell played all ten seasons of his career with the Rockets as he averaged 9.5 points, 4.8 assists, and 1.3 steals per contest.
1. Calvin Murphy: 4,402 assists
The Houston Rockets’ all-time assist leader is Hall of Fame guard Calvin Murphy. Murphy was a career Rocket, playing from 1970 to 1983. In 1,002 games, he averaged 17.9 points and 4.4 assists per contest. He twice averaged more than seven assists per game with a career high assist average of 7.4 in the 1973-74 season. The All-Star guard left his biggest mark on the NBA at the free throw line where he shot .892, the seventh best rate in league history.
