The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the NBA’s most successful franchises in all aspects. The Lakers have long been a team of elite guard play, from Jerry West in the 1960s and 1970s to Norm Nixon in the 1970s and 1980s to Magic Johnson in the 1980s and today Kobe Bryant. West, Nixon, Johnson, and Bryant comprise four of the Los Angeles Lakers’ all-time assist leaders.
5. Michael Cooper: 3,666 assists
Former defensive great Michael Cooper ranks fifth on the Los Angeles Lakers’ all-time assist leaders list. Cooper spent his entire 12-year career in LA from 1978 to 1990 as a sixth man on five title winners. He posted career averages of 8.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists, topping out with 5.9 assists per game in 1983-84. Cooper was the winner of the 1987 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award and he took home a total of eight All-Defensive honors.
4. Norm Nixon: 3,846 assists
Norm Nixon was a top point guard in the 1980s and one of the Los Angeles Lakers’ all-time assist leaders. As a member of the Lakers, Nixon finished in the NBA’s top ten in assists in all six seasons. The two-time All-Star averaged 16.4 points, 7.9 assists, and 1.8 steals per game with the Lakers. Nixon is also one of the Clippers’ top three career assist leaders. He totaled 6,386 assists in ten NBA seasons, the 24th highest total in league history.
3. Kobe Bryant: 4,791 assists*
Active team MVP Kobe Bryant is up to third on the Los Angeles Lakers’ all-time assist leaders list. Now in his 15th season in LA, Bryant has climbed the charts of several team records and he is now the Lakers’ all-time leading scorer with 25,915 points. He has averaged five or more assists per game nine times with a career high 6.0 assists per game in 2004-05. Through 1,026 games, Bryant has averages of 25.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per contest.
2. Jerry West: 6,238 assists
Hall of Fame guard Jerry West ranks second on the Los Angeles Lakers’ all-time assist leaders list. West was a career Laker, spending 14 seasons with the team from 1960 to 1974. A great scorer, West averaged 27.0 points per game for his career and as his career progressed he became an increasingly impressive distributor as well. In 1971-72, he led the NBA with a career-high 9.7 assists per game. He finished in the NBA’s top ten in assists ten times and his 6,238 total ranks 25th in league history.
1. Magic Johnson: 10,141 assists
The Los Angeles Lakers’ all-time assist leader is legendary point guard Magic Johnson. As one of the faces of the NBA in the 1980s, Johnson led the league in assists four times and dished out more than ten per game in nine consecutive seasons. He stands fourth on the NBA’s all-time assist list and his career 11.2 per game average is the highest in league history. He is one of only two players to dish out more than 10,000 assists for a single team, joined by John Stockton in that accomplishment. In addition to assists, Magic is the Lakers’ all-time steals leader and he ranks in their top five in both points and rebounds.
