Few teams have been privy to as brilliant a point guard position as the Phoenix Suns have over the last two decades. Kevin Johnson was acquired by the Suns in 1988 and since then, the team has had an All-Star floor general for virtually every game since. Elite point guards Kevin Johnson, Steve Nash, and Jason Kidd, with a combined 26 seasons in Phoenix, headline the Suns’ all-time assist leaders.
5. Jason Kidd: 3,011 assists
The NBA’s active passing king Jason Kidd ranks fifth on the Phoenix Suns’ all-time assist leaders list. Kidd spent five of his best seasons in Phoenix including a stretch of three straight seasons in which he led the NBA in assists. The 11-time All-Star played 309 games for the Suns with averages of 14.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 9.7 assists, and 2.1 steals per game. Also the New Jersey Nets’ all-time leader in assists, Kidd now ranks second in NBA history with a total of 10,999 assists through 1,194 games.
4. Walter Davis: 3,340 assists
A six-time All-Star swingman from the 1980s, Walter Davis spent 11 years in Phoenix to become one of the Suns’ all-time assist leaders. A scorer above all else, Davis tallied 15,666 points during his tenure to become the Suns’ all-time leading scorer. He averaged 20.5 points and 4.4 assists in 766 games with Phoenix and he averaged more than five assists per game three times.
3. Alvan Adams: 4,012 assists
Career Suns big man Alvan Adams ranks third on the Phoenix Suns’ all-time assist leaders list. Adams played a team record 988 games in Phoenix from 1975 to 1988 with an impressive and balanced stat sheet that included 14.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.3 steals per contest. Adams won the 1976 NBA Rookie of the Year Award as he posted his career-high in assists with 5.6 per game. In addition to his impressive passing work, Adams became the Suns’ career leader in rebounds with 6,937 and steals with 1,289.
2. Steve Nash: 5,540 assists*
Phoenix’s current MVP point guard Steve Nash is up to second on the list of Suns’ all-time assist leaders. Nash began his career with Phoenix and after a six-year stint in Dallas, he returned at the top of his game. He has led the NBA in assists four times in the last six seasons with the Suns and he now maintains overall averages of 14.6 points and 9.0 assists through 614 games with the franchise. A winner of two NBA MVP Awards in Phoenix, Nash has climbed up to eighth in NBA history with 8,473 assists and he is on pace to reach sixth place in the 2010-11 season.
1. Kevin Johnson: 6,518 assists
The Phoenix Suns’ all-time assist leader is a former five-time All-NBA point guard and the current Sacramento Mayor: Kevin Johnson. Johnson gave the Suns terrific point guard play from 1988 to 2000 as he averaged a combined 18.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, 9.5 assists, and 1.5 steals in 683 games. He began his Phoenix career by averaging more than ten assists per game for each of his first five years there. The three-time All-Star helped the Suns reach the playoffs in 11 of 12 seasons and he holds the team’s single-season assist records of 991 total and 12.2 per game from the 1988-89 season.
