5. Geoff Petrie: 2,057 assists
Geoff Petrie spent the duration of his six-year injury-shortened career in Portland to become one of the Trail Blazers’ all-time assist leaders. Petrie was a two-time All-Star guard and the winner of the 1971 NBA Rookie of the Year Award. He averaged 21.8 points and 4.6 assists in 446 games with Portland and at the time of his retirement, he did so as the Blazers’ all-time leading scorer and assist leader, though both records have since been broken.
4. Rod Strickland: 2,573 assists
Longtime top play-maker Rod Strickland ranks fourth on the list of Portland Trail Blazers’ all-time assist leaders. Strickland spent four of his prime seasons in Portland from 1992 to 1996 and he returned for a brief stint as a backup in 2001. He averaged 8.2 assists along with 16.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.6 steals in 312 games with the Blazers. After leaving Portland, he led the NBA in assists in 1997-98 with 10.5 per game. His 7,987 total assists rank in the top ten in NBA history. Strickland also sits second on the Wizards’ career assists list.
3. Damon Stoudamire: 3,018 assists
Former Rookie of the Year Damon Stoudamire is third on the Portland Trail Blazers’ all-time assist leaders list. Stoudamire ran the point for the Blazers teams that reached back-to-back Western Conference Finals in 1999 and 2000. In eight seasons with the franchise, he averaged 12.8 points and 5.7 assists per game. Stoudamire’s best assist numbers came in Toronto where he averaged 8.8 per game and he remains one of the Raptors’ top three assist leaders.
2. Clyde Drexler: 4,933 assists
Hall of Fame swingman Clyde Drexler ranks second among the Portland Trail Blazers’ all-time assist leaders. Drexler had a brilliant career in every facet of the game. In 12 seasons with the Blazers, he became their all-time leading scorer with 18,040 points, their all-time leading rebounder with 5,339, and their career steals leader with 1,795. Drexler averaged 5.7 assists in 867 games in Portland including one brilliant season in which he dished out 8.0 per game in 1985-86. With 6,125 total, Drexler is one of the few non-point guards in the NBA’s top 30 assist leaders.
1. Terry Porter: 5,319 assists
The Portland Trail Blazers’ all-time assist leader is two-time All-Star point guard Terry Porter. Porter spent his 11 best seasons with the Blazers from 1985 to 1995. Porter owns five of the top six single-season assist totals in Blazers’ history including the team record 831 from 1987-88. He averaged 14.9 points, 7.0 assists, and 1.6 steals in 758 games with the team. Porter is 12th on the NBA’s all-time assists list with 7,160 and he is also in the historic top 25 in threes (1,297) and steals (1,583).
