The Utah Jazz’s all-time assist leaders include five All-Stars, two of which were recently inducted into the Hall of Fame. John Stockton and Karl Malone, the legendary duo who led the Jazz to 19 playoff appearances and two years in the NBA Finals, combined for more than 20,000 assists.
5. Jeff Hornacek: 1,895 assists
One of the greatest shooters in NBA history, two-guard Jeff Hornacek ranks fifth on the Utah Jazz all-time assist list. Hornacek spent the second half of his career in Utah from 1994 to 2000. The former All-Star averaged 4.0 assists per game in seven seasons with the Jazz and 4.9 overall for his career. With a career total of 5,281 assists, he is in the NBA’s all-time top 50 in assists. He scored 15,659 points and shot better than 40 percent from three-point range in 1,077 NBA games.
4. Deron Williams: 3,590 assists*
Utah’s current All-NBA point guard Deron Williams is up to fourth and climbing the list of the Utah Jazz’s all-time assist leaders. Williams has been running the show in Utah since 2005 and he is boasting career averages of 16.8 points and 9.2 assists through 396 games. He has averaged better than ten assists per game every season since 2007 and his career assist average is currently the eighth best in NBA history. In addition to his regular season numbers, Williams has led the NBA in postseason assists for each of the last two seasons.
3. Rickey Green: 4,159 assists
Former All-Star point guard Rickey Green ranks third on the list of Utah Jazz all-time assist leaders. Green immediately preceded John Stockton as Utah’s starting point guard and at the time of his departure, he was the team’s career leader in both assists and steals (both records have since been broken). In eight seasons with the Jazz, he averaged 6.9 assists per game and he registered a career-high 9.2 average in 1983-84.
2. Karl Malone: 5,085 assists
One of the greatest players in NBA history, Hall of Fame forward Karl Malone is second on the Utah Jazz’s all-time assist leaders list. For a legendary power forward who retired with career averages of 25.0 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, Malone’s brilliant passing game can be easily overlooked. He averaged more than four assists per game in seven seasons with a career mark of 3.5 per contest. With 5,248 assists in 19 seasons, he is one of only a handful of non-guards in the top 50 NBA assist leaders.
1. John Stockton: 15,806 assists
The Utah Jazz’s all-time assist leader is the NBA’s record holder in the category: Hall of Fame point guard John Stockton. Stockton holds five of the six highest single-season assist averages in NBA history including the league record 14.5 per game from 1989-90. No player is within even 4,000 assists of his record total as he maintained a double-digit average for a career that lasted 1,504 games. Stockton also holds the NBA’s steals record by a wide margin with 3,265.
