With over 300 Xbox Live Arcade games currently available, and more getting released every week, it can be hard to keep track of which ones are worth playing. Things get even more confusing when you factor in all the ones that have been announced. However, there are five upcoming titles that stand out above the rest. These are Magicka, Dungeon Defender, Bionic Commando Rearmed 2, Raskulls and Swarm. They vary greatly in game genres and play styles, but all possess a level of greatness that cannot be ignored.
The number of four player co-operative titles on Xbox Live Arcade is quite small. Magicka is looking not just to increase that count by one but to do so with a humorous fun game. Magicka is an action adventure title where you play as a wizard in a Norse mythos setting. You and three friends join your powers and abilities into unique combinations to complete the 13 level campaign. The release of Magicka is expected in the first half of 2011.
With a unique mix of tower defense and action role playing game Dungeon Defender looks like a uniquely great game. The games run in Dungeon Defender like a tower defense title with waves of enemies attacking after you get a setup phase. Unlike most tower defense games you play as an actual character in the dungeon you are defending. As you progress you level up your character in an RPG style with persistence a character. With a mix of strategy and action plus 4 player cooperative play there is something in Dungeon Defender for everyone.
Bionic Commando Rearmed 2
Bionic Commando’s classic side-scrolling game play is back but with great new additions to the series. Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 brings Nathan Spenser back but now with the option to jump while swinging and grappling. They are also adding new weapons to the arsenal to take on the biggest bosses Nathan has ever faced. Coming in early 2011 Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 has the best visuals ever seen in a Bionic Commando title and a new retro-remixed soundtrack.
Fast paced puzzle platformers are not found frequently on Xbox Live Arcade, but Raskulls looks to address that. Raskulls is a huge game with 60 campaign levels, 16 grand prix races and multiplayer modes. Players can jump, swim, run, smash and fall through the levels as they progress through the humorous Raskulls world. The release date is not yet set but should be coming in early 2011.
Comic mayhem is the goal in Swarm as it combines controlling 50 characters at once in an action platforming setting. Swarmites have no fear and will do whatever you tell them to. Hopefully you can complete the levels without killing them all off, but at the same time killing a few Swarmites can be brutally funny. Swarm is a unique take on a platformer where one person tries to control a large group of characters at once.
