Halloween is about to arrive and you might be wondering what video games you should play to get in the mood for that spooky night. This list contains some of my top choices for games that will send shivers down your spine, as well as some picks that will please just about any type of gamer- the list even contains an old favorite for kids
Resident Evil 1- Gamecube
This is a gorgeous remake of the very first Resident Evil game made for the original Playstation. New story elements, beautiful new textures, and re-recorded dialogue make this the definitive version of the classic horror game. Also new to the remake are the Crimson Heads, zombies that shriek and actually run at the player if they aren’t killed properly the first time around. This adds a new layer of challenge to the game, forcing the player to decide what they are going to leave behind so they could fit gasoline into their limited inventory to properly dispose of zombie corpses by burning them really redefined the survival aspect of survival horror. There is a Wii version of the game, but the Gamecube version can also be played on the Wii for pretty cheap if you can find any controllers in second hand stores.
House of the Dead: Overkill- Wii
An ode to horror B movies of yesteryear, House of the Dead: Overkill provides gruesome co-op play that will be sure to keep you and a friend up all night blasting zombies. The gritty visual filter and goofy storyline give this title a style of its own, making it a game no zombie movie buff should skip out on. Providing laughs and scares around every corner, this game is reminiscent of one of those haunted house experiences that pop up around the country every October.
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories- PS2, Wii
If psychological thrillers are more your style than zombie movies or slasher films this game was made for you. Genuinely chilling, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories doesn’t have the cheap jump out and shock your scares that other games may have, it uses a consistently unsettling atmosphere and excellent story telling to accomplish that. Featuring one of the best told, and most thought provoking stories I have experienced in gaming, this game will stay in your memory long after you have completed it.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors- Super Nintendo, Genesis, Virtual Console
This is the one game on this list that you can play with your children. Featuring cartoon versions of familiar monsters from Hollywood’s early days, like mummies, vampires, werewolves, and even fishmen from the lagoon, the only real scares this game provides is when you run out of ammo or get surrounded by monsters. Now available on the Wii’s Virtual Console downloadable game service, this game is great for fans of the original title to play through once more with their children.
Resident Evil 4- Gamecube, PS2, Wii
This is the perfect game for action horror fans. Tight gameplay, cheesy but interesting story, and some genuinely freaky bosses make this an excellent game to play leading up to Halloween, or anytime really. It is probably one of the best games of all time after all. The Gamecube version of the game can be played on Wii, or you can find the definitive Wii version pretty cheap as well. The Wii version adds excellent pointer controls to the mix, as well as all the extras originally exclusive to the PS2 version of the game. This is the first Resident Evil game to move away from stereotypical zombie villains, instead featuring the mysterious Los Illuminados who prove to be much smarter and deadlier than their lumbering predecessors.
